JOB SUMMARY:

The Vanderbilt Music Cognition Lab seeks a music therapist for research studies on music and social interaction/communication in parents and young children (including but not limited to infants, toddlers, and preschoolers with and without ASD). Projects in the Music Cognition Lab investigate the mechanisms by which musical activities impact parent-child relationships, child social communication development, and parent emotional well-being through lab-based, experimental studies and longitudinal psychoeducational parent-child music programming. The music therapist will provide psychoeducational parent-child music sessions (individual and group) and music-based parent coaching for ongoing research. In addition, the music therapist will provide music-based naturalistic developmental behavioral interventions (NDBIs) for young children with autism for federally-funded research studies. Therapist should have experience working with families of young children including children with ASD; prior experience with parent psychoeducation and/or parent coaching is preferred. Opportunities to be involved with other aspects of the research experience (e.g., data collection, coding/analysis, study dissemination, study coordination) and music-based community engagement activities available and individualized to therapist’s interests and goals. This is a part-time position (~20 hrs/week).

The Music Cognition Lab is a fast-paced and exciting environment that engages students from a wide range of Vanderbilt undergraduate and graduate programs. Our collaborative relationships on campus include partnerships with Vanderbilt Kennedy Center/Treatment and Research Institute for Autism Spectrum Disorder; Vanderbilt Brain Institute; and The Curb Center for Art, Enterprise, and Public Policy at Vanderbilt. Provides direct services for neonates, infants, toddlers, school age children and adolescents by using music as a tool to help them attain and maintain their maximum levels of functioning in the areas of physical, cognitive, communication and social/emotional health. Program planning will be designed to reduce stress, increase adaptive coping, provide normalization, promote social interaction and support developmental integrity through play experiences in a safe environment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Uses music therapeutically to support children and youth, incorporating professional expertise and knowledge related to human development and healthcare experiences.
  • Designs and implements music therapy sessions based on patient/family strengths and needs, using music improvisation, receptive music listening, song writing, lyric discussion, music and imagery and music performance.
  • Coordinates, trains, and supervises volunteers and students in majors related to music therapy during field work/internship experiences.
  • Contributes to the organization by actively participating in process improvement initiatives and shared decision making.

Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent experience) and 1 year relevant experience

Licensure, Certification, and/or Registration (LCR):

  • Board Certified Music Therapist Required-can be obtained up to 6 months after job acceptance.
