PRIMARY PURPOSE/SCOPE

The Network Support Specialist will be responsible at Bluefield University to provide technical support and maintenance for the organization's computer network and telephony systems, ensuring their reliability, security, and optimal performance. This includes configuring, troubleshooting, and resolving network-related issues, maintaining network security and monitoring network performance. The Network Support Specialist is responsible for providing technical support to users, maintaining network documentation, and continuously improving network infrastructure. All duties and responsibilities are to be performed in harmony with Christian principles and within the mission and vision of Bluefield University.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES, AND FUNCTIONS

The essential duties, responsibilities, and functions of the Network Support Specialist include, but are not limited to, the following:

· Provide technical support and maintenance for the organization's computer network systems, including hardware, software, and peripherals.

· Monitor and troubleshoot network performance and security issues, identify, and resolve technical problems.

· Configure, install, and upgrade network hardware and software, and maintain network documentation.

· Manage network security, including firewall and VPN configurations, and ensure compliance with security policies and procedures.

· Collaborate with other IT staff to plan, design, and implement network infrastructure upgrades and new installations.

· Provide end-user support for network-related issues, troubleshoot technical problems, and escalate issues as needed.

· Continuously monitor network performance, identify trends and potential issues, and proactively resolve them.

· Keep up to date with new technology and advancements in the field, and continuously improve the network infrastructure.

MARGINAL DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES, AND FUNCTIONS

· Providing training and guidance to end-users on the proper use of network systems and related technologies.

· Assisting with the planning and implementation of network infrastructure projects, such as migrations, upgrades, and new installations.

· Performing regular system backups and ensuring the security of backed-up data.

· Assisting with the design and implementation of network security measures, such as intrusion detection and prevention systems.

· Participating in the evaluation and selection of new hardware and software systems and making recommendations for purchase.

· Performing regular maintenance and upgrades on network systems, including firmware and software updates.

· Assisting with the development and enforcement of network policies and procedures.

· Staying informed of industry trends and new technologies and making recommendations for improving network performance and security.

SUPERVISORY DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES, AND FUNCTIONS

The Network Support Specialist position does not have supervisory duties and responsibilities, as this position is considered a non-management role.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

· Knowledge of computer networking concepts, protocols, and technologies, such as TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VPN, and firewalls.

· Strong technical skills, including experience with network hardware, software, and peripherals, such as routers, switches, and firewalls.

· Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot complex technical issues, and to resolve problems in a timely manner.

· Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical users.

· Knowledge of security concepts and practices, and experience with security tools and technologies, such as intrusion detection and prevention systems, and firewalls.

· Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

· Familiarity with operating systems, such as Windows and Linux.

· A bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.

· 2+ years of experience in a technical support or network administration role, with experience in managing and maintaining computer networks.

ERGONOMIC REQUIREMENTS

· Physical Demands

· Sitting for extended periods of time at a computer workstation.

· Occasional lifting and carrying of equipment, such as network hardware and peripherals, which may weigh up to 50 pounds.

· Reaching, bending, and twisting to install and maintain network equipment.

· Prolonged use of a computer keyboard and mouse.

· Ability to work in confined spaces, such as server rooms or equipment closets, and to navigate around equipment and cables.

· Normal responsibilities should not afford risks of accidental injury.

· Specialized Equipment Requirements

· Computer workstations and servers, including desktop computers, laptops, and servers.

· Network hardware, such as routers, switches, firewalls, and wireless access points.

· Network peripherals, such as cabling, connectors, and modems.

· Test equipment, such as cable testers, network analyzers, and signal generators.

· Diagnostic tools, such as network monitors, intrusion detection systems, and performance management software.

· Tools for installing and maintaining equipment, such as screwdrivers, pliers, and cable crimpers.

· Telecommunication equipment, such as telephones, fax machines, and video conferencing systems.

· Working Conditions

· Office or data center environment, with exposure to computer hardware, electrical equipment, and network components.

· Regular exposure to a computer screen and keyboard, and to the bright lights and noise of a data center environment.

· Work may be required outside of normal business hours, including evenings, weekends, to support critical network operations and to perform maintenance and upgrades.
