FLSA STATUS: Exempt

POSITION SUMMARY: Provide Occupational Therapy as a related service for students with disabilities, in accordance with State and federal regulations and local procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Conduct assessments of referred students, and report findings to the appropriate team(s) or individuals.
  • Develop goals, objectives and dismissal criteria in conjunction with other team members whenever possible, in order to maximize the integration of therapy into the students’ educational programs, as well as, attend evaluation meetings, IEP meetings, and other parent meetings.
  • Schedule students for Occupational Therapy and provide services in cooperation with teachers, administrators and other support staff.
  • Keep records as directed; for example, lesson plans, progress notes, Medicaid documentation.
  • Determine the needs for adaptive equipment and assistive technology, and carry out the necessary steps to obtain or create such items, implement them appropriately, and monitor their use.
  • Select other supplies, materials, equipment and assessment tools appropriate for the population served, and make recommendations to the Special Education Coordinator.
  • Provide guidance to staff and parents on such topics as developmentally appropriate skills, sensory needs, and the modification of materials and the environment.
  • Provide information and/or in-service training as needed to staff members, parents, students and groups.
  • Keep informed about current practices, rules and regulations, in Occupational Therapy and Special Education,
  • Supervise Occupational Therapy Assistants as needed.
  • Use sound judgment, tact and diplomacy when interacting with students, parents and the community, and maintain the confidentiality of information that is not public domain.
  • Serve as role model in the practice of ethical principles, responsible behavior and democratic values.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Participate in school activities and assist teachers and Principals, with the approval of the Special Education Coordinator.
  • Prepare reports as requested by Administrators, agencies or private practitioners.
  • Keep an inventory of the supplies and equipment associated with Occupational Therapy, and identify the maintenance needs of such items.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Special Education Coordinator.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Therapy.
  • Occupational Therapist, registered by the Ohio Board of O.T.’s, P.T.’s and Athletic Trainers.
  • Eligible for a certificate/license issued by the State of Ohio to practice Occupational Therapy in the public schools.
  • Membership in a professional association related to Occupational Therapy, preferred.
  • Alternative to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and/or Board of Education may find appropriate.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Thorough knowledge of the appropriate management of school-age children with disabilities.
  • Familiarity with basic assistive technology for classroom use; for example, switches, computer adaptations, and augmentative communication devices.
  • Well developed oral and written communication skills.
  • Willingness to support the school district’s philosophy and methods for educating students with disabilities.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with adults, and an understanding of how to appropriately educate them regarding Occupational Therapy in the schools.
  • Well developed problem solving and organizational skills.
EQUIPMENT OPERATED:
  • Computer/printer.
  • Various office machines; for example, fax machines and copiers.
  • Adaptive equipment and assistive technology; for example but not limited to, lifts, wheelchairs, sensory equipment (such as swings), self-care equipment and switches.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Frequent exposure to blood and other bodily fluids and tissue
  • Occasional operation of a vehicle in inclement weather; that is, being prepared to come to school on all scheduled work days, except calamity days.
  • Frequent travel between buildings in the school district, and occasional travel to workshops and schools outside the district.
  • Some interaction with unruly children and possible interaction with distraught or angry adults.
  • Must be available for education related purposes outside the instructional day when requested to do so under reasonable terms; for example, I.E.P. meetings.
  • Regular requirement to sit, stand, walk, talk, see, hear, read, reach with hands and arms, crouch, kneel, climb and stoop.
  • Potential requirement to lift children, using lifting equipment and the assistance of other people as needed.
  • Frequent requirement to lift, push, pull and carry various supplies and equipment, up to 25 pounds.
  • Frequent requirement to transport supplies and equipment between buildings.
