Certification/
Qualifications:

1. Master's Degree in Occupational Therapy (required);

2. Evidence of full licensure for an occupational therapist through the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) (required) and National Board for Certification of Occupational Therapy (NBCOT);

3. Experience working with all school-aged groups (preschool through age 26)

4. Experience developing parent training and support programs;

5. Experience and knowledge of special education guidelines for qualifying for school-based services;

6. Experience in the development of IEPs;

7. Experience in case management for preschool through age 26

8. Experience providing consultative services to adults in a variety of settings;

9. Expertise in mentoring other colleagues and supervise COTAs in and outside of the profession;

10. Skilled in provision of oral-motor treatment, sensory processing difficulties, and developing compensatory and treatment strategies;

11. Skilled in evaluation of pre-school and school aged children with standardized and non-standardized methods.

12. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Education may find appropriate and acceptable

Job Goal: To establish and maintain an educational services that could include preschool classrooms, self-contained classrooms, and K-12 special education service. This position requires a person that is driven and self- sufficient, with the ability to juggle a schedule that changes from week to week.

Position Description:

  • As a member of the Multidisciplinary Evaluation Team (MET), provide a thorough assessment and develop goals / recommendations in the areas of fine motor, oral motor and sensory processing skills.
  • Review planning for students yearly through an Individual Educational Program (IEP) based on child’s abilities and areas of need.
  • Prepare for daily lessons and show evidence of preparation through development of IEP performance objectives.
  • Assess the growth of students and provide progress reports as required.
  • Employ a variety of instructional techniques and resources consistent with the needs of preschool, school-aged, and their families.
  • Work collaboratively with district staff and ISD team members to identify unique child strengths, resources and needs.
  • Establish an effective means of communication with the parent(s) of each child assigned.
  • Create a working environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the needs of each child.
  • Cooperate with special education ancillary staff in the provision of related educational services to students.
  • Participate regularly in physical management training (non-violent crisis intervention) and CPR as assigned.
  • Maintain, prepare and process the district’s required documentation, which includes, but is not limited to the following: Program data, Medicaid, student count, etc.
  • Keep the special education program supervisor and the ISD Director of special education informed of any issues that may significantly impact the delivery of special education programs and services.
  • Make appropriate referrals to other disciplines and to other agencies.
  • Maintain professional competence in the field which may include attending and participating in professional organizations, workshops, and conferences.
  • Serve as a resource to staff members in the development of a balanced program for occupational therapy.
  • Assist and guide staff in observing, describing and referring suspected and identified children with occupational therapy needs
  • Collaborate with staff members to implement therapy suggestions for the child’s daily activities.
  • Other duties as defined by the Director of special education, Superintendent or School Board
