(DPR) provides a broad range of programs, services, facilities and park amenities in the City and County of Denver.
Outdoor Recreation
(ODR) offers a variety of outdoor activities for all ages. Outdoor Recreation is responsible for group programs within Denver parks that activate snow, water, and land. Large initiatives include, but are not limited to, high and low challenge course elements at Genesee Mountain Park, ski and snowboard partnerships, paddle sports, and backcountry experiences including camping, hiking, mountain biking, and rock climbing.
The City and County of Denver’s Outdoor Recreation team is looking to hire an Outdoor Recreation Coordinator dedicated to the programming and activation of Denver’s Mountain Parks. The Denver Mountain Parks system covers more than 14,000 acres spread across five counties ranging from 4,000 feet to 13,000 feet above sea level. The system includes over 45 distinct parks with 15 mountain parks that are publicly accessible with hiking and other low impact recreation opportunities. This position provides coordination of outdoor recreation programs, community engagement, staff training, and operational leadership.
The Outdoor Recreation Coordinator is responsible for:
  • Proposing, developing, and implementing new and innovative outdoor recreation programs for individuals, families, and groups
  • Supporting training and development of on-call staff
  • Overseeing outreach efforts to connect with new participants and groups
  • Exploring opportunities for expanding community events within Denver’s Mountain Parks
  • Evaluating and reporting on program metrics
  • Maintaining gear, equipment, and outdoor recreation program facilities
  • Working with Denver Parks and Recreation’s Marketing team to communicate Outdoor Recreation program opportunities to the community
  • Collaborating with community partners, schools, and neighborhood organizations
  • Creating seasonal program schedules that maximize city resources, facilities, staff time, and number of quality outdoor recreation opportunities for Denver residents
  • Coordinating logistics, and communication of program details to staff, community partners and participants
  • Collaborating with the
    Denver Mountain Parks
    Environmental Education team, the Alternative and Adventure Sports team, and other City and County of Denver entities to expand upon existing Outdoor Recreation program opportunities
  • Performing other duties as assigned
About You
Our ideal candidate will have:
  • Extensive experience with event planning and coordination in an outdoor recreation setting
  • Extensive experience working with all ages, particularly active older adults, youth, youth programs, or youth development
  • Experience coordinating outdoor recreation programming at multiple sites/locations at one time
  • Marketing and community engagement experience/knowledge
  • Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder Certification
  • Current certification(s) in a variety of outdoor recreation disciplines preferred
  • AMGA and ACA Watersports training/certifications strongly preferred
  • Strong organizational skills, team oriented, ability to be flexible amidst changing priorities, and able to work a variety of shifts, including evenings and weekends

  • Education: Graduation from high school or the possession of a GED, HiSET or TASC Certificate.
  • Experience: Five (5) years of experience working in recreation, education, or a closely related field.
  • Licensures/Certification(s): Requires a valid Driver's License at the time of application. Requires certification in CPR/First Aid within 6 months of probation. Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.
  • Equivalency: Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirement.
