In this position, you will be able to enjoy the stunning vistas and scenic waterways of the parks situated along the Columbia River Gorge near Hood River, Oregon. This position falls under the classification Park Ranger 1.

What you will do:
As a Park Ranger 1 at this location, your duties will primarily focus on park operations, custodial maintenance, and building maintenance and construction.
In this role, you will:
General Park Operations
  • Maintain and clean work sites, shops, yards, and storage areas.
  • Enter maintenance and construction activity information into database.
  • As assigned, give direction concerning work procedures and quality standards to individuals or teams.
Custodial Maintenance
  • Clean park facilities including restrooms, showers, maintenance shops, and interpretive centers.
  • Ensure supplies are stocked in restrooms, collect garbage and recycling, clean fireplaces.
Building Maintenance & Construction
  • Maintain and repair plumbing systems such as unclogging toilets, drains, sewer lines, replacing pipes, etc.
  • Utilize carpentry skills to mend or construct walls, floors, ceiling, and roofs using hand and power tools.
  • Maintain electrical systems such as resetting circuit breakers and replacing fuses, lights, outlets, switches, etc.
Additional Duties:
  • Planting and pruning vegetation, mowing lawns, and irrigating.
  • Construct and maintain trails, footbridges, footpaths, signs, water fountains, benches, etc.
  • Provide information about local attractions and explain park rules and regulations to park visitors.
  • Patrol park areas to protect and preserve resources and facilities by checking for misuse, undesirable activities, and hazardous situations.
  • Identify and repair water and sewer system breakdowns including equipment malfunctions, leaks, and infiltration.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Two years of visitor services experience (e.g. rule enforcement; interpretation such as education and environmental awareness programs; special events and activities; etc.) AND/OR maintenance experience (e.g., construction trades, landscaping)

OR
  • An Associate’s degree or higher in Park and Recreation Administration, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Studies and 6 months of visitor services experience (e.g., rule enforcement; interpretation such as education and environmental awareness programs; special events and activities; etc.) AND/OR maintenance experience (e.g., construction trades, landscaping)
Special Requirements:
  • To be hired, you must have a criminal records and driving records check that meets OPRD Criteria at the time of hire, and throughout employment.
  • You must have a valid driver’s license at the time of hire and throughout employment.
  • Must wear OPRD supplied uniform and comply with appearance code while on duty.
  • Ability to obtain one or more of the following within 90 days of hire:
    • Oregon Driver’s License
    • First Aid/CPR Certification
    • Enforcement Officer Status

  • Skill and knowledge of basic park resources, including overnight campgrounds, facility operations, maintenance, and resource interpretation.
  • Skill in providing factual information based on observation, knowledge, and understanding.
  • Experience using a computer with software programs like (MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook, web-based reservation systems etc.) to enter data, registration of customers, fee collection, reconciling fees and completing deposits.
  • Ability to maintain composure and take appropriate action during emergency or emotionally charged situations.
  • Experience working with the public, evaluating situations, applying rules and guidelines, and determining and carrying out an appropriate course of action.
  • Skill in the safe use of tools, materials, and equipment associated with the maintenance of landscapes, buildings, facilities, and utilities.
  • Experience leading teams of staff, work crews, volunteers and public to accomplish basic tasks and achieve goals.
  • Experience performing basic plumbing, carpentry, painting, woodworking, electrical skills and grounds keeping tasks.
  • Experience in promoting a culturally competent and diverse work environment.

  • The salary listed is at the non-PERS rate. Public Employee Retirement System (PERS) eligible employees will have their base salary increased by 6% and pay the 6% employee contribution to PERS.
