Dynamic startup is looking for an individual to join the Human Resources team as a Payroll & Benefits Specialist. The main responsibility will be to run our payroll and benefits and perform some general HR duties. This person will be a vital part of the functions of the Human Resources department including processing weekly payroll, HRIS, benefits, leave of absences and enforcing company policies and practices. This role will work closely with the HR team and other business Stakeholders to evolve, advance and ensure the HR function operates as a center of excellence

Payroll Administration

  • Process bi-monthly payroll for 100+ employees
  • Maintain compliance with federal, state, and provincial regulations concerning employment, and monitor labor law updates for changes that affect HR, including reviewing and updating employee handbooks or employment agreements
  • Primary escalation point for payroll related inquiries will respond to frequent and urgent requests for information relating to payroll, tax processing and payroll policy matters
  • Oversees maintenance of employee records in HRIS system and updating of employee payroll records
  • Process payroll changes (new hires, terminations, garnishments, direct deposit, locality, benefits, salary adjustments, etc.)
  • Perform administrative support to finance team, including assisting with audits

Benefits Administration

  • Administer all employee benefit programs including enrollments, changes and terminations
  • Assist with Open Enrollment and benefits enhancements
  • Responsible for 401k administration
  • Facilitate employee leave of absence in conjunction with third party administrator & vendors
  • Partner with the HR team to establish the annual benefit strategy and plan designs, ensuring programs are competitive, cost effective and will attract and retain talent
  • Coordinates and conducts the new hire orientation and presents benefits presentations to ensure employees gain an understanding of benefit plans and enrollment provisions

General HR duties

  • Respond to employment verifications and surveys as needed
  • Provide generalist support within the HR team and completes ad hoc projects as assigned
  • Manage annual and internal audits, ensuring data integrity across all payroll, benefits, and HR platforms
  • Conducts or acquires background checks and employee eligibility verifications
  • Assist in hiring including the creation of offer letters and new hire communications
  • Provides backup of duties for HR Team
  • Provide periodic and new employee training

Education and Experience Requirements

  • This position requires an individual that is flexible and has the ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times
  • The ideal candidate is looking for a fast-paced environment
  • At least 5 years of office and/or HR administrative experience
  • Strong understanding of Human Resources processes and terminology, payroll and benefit processes and procedures, including eligibility and enrollment rules and benefit procedures
  • Undergraduate college degree
  • Familiarity with an HRIS system, preferably Workday
  • Ability to follow up without oversight
  • Proactive and autonomous
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to multitask and prioritize work
  • Attention to detail and problem solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational and planning skills
  • Proficient in Gmail, Google Drive, Google Sheets/Docs/Slides, Adobe or DocuSign
  • Technology driven, staying up to date on the newest technology to automate procedures
