Position: Peer Support Specialist

Region: East County

The Peer Support Specialist reports directly to the Peer Support Specialist Supervisor. Peer Support Specialist services include, but are not limited to, prevention services, advocacy, support, strength-based coaching, facilitation, and education. Conduct educational skill building groups that teaches beneficiaries and their families coping mechanisms and problem-solving skills. Lead activities and coaching to encourage and support beneficiaries to participate in behavioral health treatment. Support beneficiaries in their transitions between levels of care and supporting beneficiaries in developing their own recovery goals and processes. Provide care coordination services that include planning, finding, and accessing community resources and services, coaching, mentoring, facilitation, and/or psychoeducation.

Qualifications, Skills, Knowledge, and Experience: Must comply with the State Public Health Officer Order mandating all health care workers be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Must be self-identified as having experience with the process of recovery from mental illness and/or substance use disorder either as a consumer of these services or as the parent or family member of the consumer. Must obtain a state-approved Medi-Cal Peer Support Specialist certification within 6 months of hire and renew certification biennially. Must agree in writing, to adhere to the Medi-Cal Code of Ethics, for peer support specialists. Must be at least 18 years of age. Possess a high school diploma or equivalent degree. Must have a strong dedication to recovery and be willing to share their experience. Must be able to pass a drug test, background clearance, and provide a negative TB test. Must be free of probation or parole for at least one year. Actively models the highest ethical standards; is honest and accountable; always maintains confidentiality and appropriate boundaries. Establishes rapport easily with others; listens attentively; appropriately expresses empathy. Must have a clean driving record, with a minimum of two years driving experience. Skills include strong paperwork and computer skills, ability to maintain-up-to-date records, exceptional written and verbal communication; ability to work in a team; excellent time management skills; and organizational abilities. Must comply with all agency and contract requirements related to trainings, public health, certifications, reporting, etc. Bilingual proficiency preferred.
