Minimum Entry Level Qualifications
Experience and/or level of competency: One (1) year hospital pharmacy experience and/or training or graduate of certified training program/healthcare careers college. Registration in good standing with Texas State Board of Pharmacy. Valid Certified Pharmacy Technician Certificate. National IV Certification preferred; if do not have, must be completed within 1 year of employment. Basic computer knowledge. Knowledge of automated pharmacy systems. Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing; additional languages preferred.
Academic Preparation: High School diploma or the equivalent.
Job Summary:
Assists the Pharmacist by filling physician orders for medications for oral, rectal, topical and injectable use; mixes IV admixture solutions as required using aseptic technique in the Laminar Air Flow Hood; type’s labels, prepares and files charge slips and performs other related duties.
Specific Responsibilities:
- Assists the Pharmacist in providing medication, drug information and pharmaceutical services to patients, nurses, physicians and other hospital personnel.
- Prepares intravenous solutions and admixtures.
- Maintains inventory of supplies and reorders them accordingly.
- Assists in filling prescriptions.
- Processes records of medications and supplies dispensed to patients or customers, computes charges and either enters them into the computer or forwards them to Information Systems.
- Prepares select reports and MARs.
- Receives and stores incoming deliveries of medication and supplies.
- Participates in departmental and organizational performance improvement and CQI activities.
- Assists the Pharmacists in providing pharmaceutical care for patients ranging in age from newborn to the elderly. Must be able to identify and understand that there are dosage variations between newborn, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients, and know to consult with the Pharmacist if any doubts or questions arise.
- Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
- Maintains the Pharmacy Department in a clean and orderly manner.
- Demonstrates ability to calculate figures and amounts relating to dosage calculations when filing various prescriptions ranging from the newborn to the elderly populations.
- Demonstrates ability to apply common sense and understanding to carry out instruction furnished in written, oral and diagram form.
- Demonstrates ability to deal with problems involving several variables in particular situations.
- Recognizes inappropriate dosing based on available dosage forms for various age groups.
- Performs other pharmacy-related duties as requested or required.
