Under the direction of the Nursing Supervisor works with the other LPNs, RNs, CNAs, MAs, physicians, and mid-level providers in performing specimen preparation and lab reporting of patients receiving care at Bond Community Health Center.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Collect timed and dated specimens following established guidelines for laboratory procedures as ordered by a licensed health care provider.
• Place patient’s name, DOB or MR number, date of collection, time of collection and source (as applicable) and staff’s initial who obtains specimen.
• Match all lab requisition forms/routers/ with specimens.
• Properly complete reference lab requisition and in-house results forms.
• Properly maintain laboratory equipment. Report all hazards to supervisor.
• Review patient’s chart prior to and following the medical examination in order that the medical nursing regimen can be implemented.
• Assure that supplies are properly stocked.
• Follow Universal Precautions and Standard OSHA guidelines.
• Keep work areas neat and clean.
• Preserve specimens appropriately.
• Ensure refrigerator is neat and clean.
• Maintain refrigerator log daily.
• Dispose of contaminated sharps following standard blood borne pathogen precautions.
• Prepare biohazard waste for weekly collection.
• Routinely collect specimens from collection racks at various stations in facility.
• Prepare specimen for night box or courier.
• Prepare reports for addition to the medical record.
• Notify ordering provider of panic labs and specimen errors immediately.
• Forward STD reports to Leon County Health Department as directed by provider.
• Record and maintain appropriate files and journals as required by the Florida Department of Health and to assure accurate assessment and review of services performed.
• Report items to be reordered to Nursing Supervisor (ex. – meds, supplies, etc.).
• Reorder lab supplies as needed that are complimentary from the Laboratory vendors.
• Perform other clinical duties as required to facilitate smooth patient flow.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Graduation from a certified and accredited training program for phlebotomy.
• One year of on-the-job experience is preferred.
• Bilingual or multilingual capability is a major asset and is welcomed.
• A quiet, calm, reassuring demeanor is needed to calm patients that may be nervous about the procedures. A neat, clean, and orderly appearance is of utmost importance.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORKING CONDITIONS:

Position requires standing, bending, some lifting and ease of movement. There is exposure to Bloodborne pathogens including HIV and Hepatitis. All clinical staff members are encouraged to receive the Hepatitis B Vaccinations (offered by BCHC free of charge) and Tetanus Toxoid.

• Position is exposed to confidential patient information, correspondence and reports and is expected to follow BCHC’s confidentiality policy as defined in the Employee Handbook.

• Errors could expose the Center to legal liability, fines, lost of revenue and possible embarrassment.

HOURS OF WORK:

• A minimum of 40 hours per week and as needed.

SALARY:

• As specified in the Notice of Hire.
