Pile Driver Job at Russell Marine
This position is accountable for supporting field operations at marine project locations for Russell Marine, LLC. The Piledriver is responsible for supporting crane operations in the construction or repair of marine terminals, dock facilities, and/or railroad bridges. Typically, they will work closely with the Barge Foreman, Pile Driver Operator, Welders, Boat Captain, Laborers, Helpers and other skilled or semi-skilled craft workers.
Works as assigned by the Barge Foreman and/or Pile Driver Operator to ensure the successful completion of on-going or new marine or railroad construction projects.
- Works closely with Barge Foreman, Welders, Helpers, Laborers and other skilled craft persons to complete current projects in a safe and efficient manner.
- Assists in unloading and assembling of crane or other hoisting equipment to be used in pile driving activities;
- Fuels, lubricates, and maintains the pile driving hammer.
- Unloads and assembles pile driving hammer and leads; unloads various types of piling – concrete, pipe, H-piling, timber and steel sheet piling.
- Lays out from blueprints and/or site plans the exact location where the pilings will be driven.
- Performs site preparation for installation of various concrete and wood structures; prepares the piling to be driven and assists in positioning and driving the piling.
- Assists with the installation of boom and hoisting cables on the equipment.
- Demonstrates knowledge of construction rigging, such as use of slings, cable chokers, spreader bars, and multi-part load blocks, to complete crane hoisting tasks.
- Utilizes various hand signals and radio communication for communicating with the Pile Driver Operator of hoisting equipment.
- Works with Pile Driver Operator to maneuver and position loads over designated areas in a smooth, safe manner.
- Operates a variety of hand and power tools in a safe and effective manner in order to minimize the risk of injury, property damage, or loss of life, including: oxygen/acetylene welding torch to cut steel plates, pipes, beams, etc., pneumatic power tools - drills, countersinks, and tuggers - as required, and/or gasoline chain saw to cut timbers and timber piling.
- Dresses and caps the pilings after having been driven and prepares them to receive the superstructure.
- Builds the form work for concrete structure, and constructs the timber falsework for structures.
- Works with and assists crew in excavation activities which may include: hoisting material, tools, equipment, cleaning and preparing work site, digging trenches, setting braces and/or forms, shoveling concrete and/or dirt into construction areas, clean up of rubble and debris, and removal of waste materials.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Participates in Safety and Environmental initiatives that will contribute to compliance of State/Federal regulations and improve existing Company programs.
- Responsible and accountable for employee’s own personal safety, as well as the safety of all co-workers and any others the employee comes in contact with.
- Authorized and obligated to stop work on any task or series of tasks whenever an unsafe condition or situation is anticipated or is observed. Brings problems to the attention of the foreman, safety director, or HR Manager.
- This position frequently requires long hours and weekend work; travel may be required; some out-of-town and overnight travel may be expected.
High school diploma or equivalent, plus minimum of two (2) years crane rigging and/or operations experience on land and on barges; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the necessary pile driving and crane operations skills, knowledge and abilities is required.The employee must:
- Demonstrate understanding of the basic functions & operations of various types of pile hammers – diesel, air, hydraulic and drop hammers.
- Demonstrate general knowledge of construction rigging: use of slings, cable chokers, spreader bars, multi-part load blocks, etc.
- Demonstrate knowledge of practices & materials involved in pile driving, and be capable of demonstrating proficiency to perform the job.
- Demonstrate knowledge of operation of various types of marine equipment and devices.
- Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and supervisors, including the ability to speak and understand English.
- Competencies: stress management/composure, teamwork, results-driven.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable workplace accommodation.
The individual must also be able to wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to work or visit within areas where it is required. This includes hard hat, safety glasses, life vest, respirators, ear plugs, steel toed shoes, personal flotation devices (PFD’s), or other protective equipment as required by the work performed and location the work is being done.
In addition, Pile Drivers must also be capable of:
- Walking, stepping, climbing or otherwise moving from one location on the job site to another, which may be of varying heights and access parameters.
- Standing, stooping, bending, crouching, kneeling, squatting, climbing or sitting for long periods of time.
- Repetitive movements by feet, shoulders, arms, wrists, hands and back in performance of work.
- Climbing vertical ladders of a height of 6ft or greater.
- Working in confined work areas and/or elevated heights.
- Lifting objects of minimum of 10lbs, with maximum single-person lift limit of 50lbs, with frequent lifting and carrying.
- Adapting to temperature changes, outdoor conditions, and prolonged exposure to dusty, wet or humid conditions, loud noises, and vibration.
