POSITION SUMMARY:
This position will assist with daily sod production and harvest operations. Responsibilities include supervising employees, directing and loading trucks, training employees to operate equipment, irrigation, chemical application, farm equipment and automotive repair and maintenance, and metal fabrication.
RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES:
- Responsible for planning, organizing, communicating, coordinating daily farm activities in a safe, efficient, and cost effective manner.
- Responsible for monitoring farm personnel to ensure all work activities are completed appropriately.
- Monitors facilities, farm equipment and vehicles according to Company policy.
- Confer with farm manager to evaluate weather and soil conditions, to develop plans and procedures, and to discuss issues such as changes in fertilizers, herbicides or cultivating techniques.
- Inspect fields to determine condition and need for cultivating, spraying, weeding or harvesting.
- Assign duties to workers such as harvesting, mowing, spraying, and rolling of sod.
- Observe workers to detect inefficient and unsafe procedures or to identify problems, initiating corrective action as necessary.
- Train workers in techniques such as planting, harvesting, weeding, and pest identification.
- Drive and operate farm machinery such as tractors, trucks or harvesters in order to transport workers and supplies, or to cultivate and harvest fields.
- Read inventory records, customer orders, and shipping schedules to determine required activities. Investigate grievances and settle disputes to maintain harmony among workers.
Qualifications
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE DESIRED:
- High school graduate or equivalent required
- Bachelor of Science in Turfgrass Science preferred
- Job related experience may be used lieu of preferred education
SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, ETC:
- Knowledge of techniques and equipment for planting, growing and harvesting sod, including storage and handling techniques.
- Knowledge of running, maneuvering, navigating or driving vehicles or mechanized equipment such as tractors, forklifts, planters, harvesters and mowers.
- Ability to perform manual work requiring strenuous physical exertion, e.g., continuous walking, bending, standing, pushing, pulling or lifting.
- Must be able to make sound judgments with minimal supervision.
- Must be able to make calculated decisions that are most efficient, effective and economically feasible.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: (IF APPLICABLE)
- This position has supervisory responsibilities.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/REQUIREMENTS (Lifting, Bending, Stretching, etc.)
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions at job sites. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud. This position is performed in outside weather conditions.

Must be a team player who is willing to cooperate with others.
Must be able to accept corrective criticism from supervisor.
Must be willing to take on a variety of assignments as assigned by management on an as-needed basis within the department and within other areas of King Ranch if necessary.
