The Planer Superintendent will provide leadership, training, and development to supervisors & hourly personnel by managing the process flow, resources and work force to meet/exceed established budgets and performance objectives at the Maxville Lumber Mill. Responsible for sawmill and maintenance team. The Planer Superintendent will report to the Mill Manager.

Here’s What You’ll Do:

  • Maintain the highest standards for safety performance, leading with a personal example and a well-communicated vision
  • Oversee the day to day operations of the sawmill facility including sawmill and maintenance departments
  • Establish and maintain quality, production and maintenance standards for the sawmill
  • Plans workflow, controls operational costs, controls maintenance costs, prioritizes and schedules outages and repair procedures, maintains staffing levels, champions employee engagement, insures environmental compliance, and is the safety leader for the function
  • Embrace the principles of employee involvement and work systems by motivating both direct and non-direct reports, seeking and listening to their input, facilitating communications across the organization and leading by example
  • Ensure established departmental budgets and performance objectives are met/exceeded by communicating those goals, as well as progress against those goals, on a regular basis; providing necessary training; directing resources; organizing the process (i.e. scheduling); and facilitating problem solving
  • Maintain product specifications, stressing the importance of manufacturing quality products, conducting routine quality checks, and facilitating continuous improvement
  • Optimizing functional area including production, scheduling, and asset utilization

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • Minimum of five years’ experience in lumber or wood products manufacturing required
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Experience and proven ability to lead teams in a non-union environment and promote a culture of trust and collaboration
  • Excellent interpersonal skills – conflict management, coaching, supportive feedback, and problem solving. Ability to function as an effective team member
  • Strong mechanical and technical knowledge. Demonstrated track record of success in a complex and fast paced manufacturing environment
  • Desire to develop towards higher levels of responsibility within West Fraser
  • Must be computer literate, including a strong background in MS Office products (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Strong Organizational and Leadership Skills
  • Detail and results oriented
