  • Shift work required - This position supports an operation that is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. You must be able to work any shift (days, swings, or graveyard), and any day of the week, to include weekends, holidays, and overtime. Currently, the schedule consists of 10-hour shifts and are divided into two squads with days off being Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, or Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
  • Must successfully complete training program - The training program lasts approximately 5 months and assigned shifts will rotate throughout the training program. Employees will be required to learn, memorize, and apply material, including self-study of material. Employees will be evaluated on a daily basis.
  • Pay considerations - The starting hourly pay for this position is $21.88 (step 1). All new employees hired for this position will start at step 1 of the range, no exceptions. Existing employees will receive increases as outlined by their bargaining agreement.
  • Background and Disqualifiers – Applicants who proceed in the selection process will be required to complete an extensive police background check. Among other items, the following are disqualifying behaviors –
    • Any felony conviction.
    • Any domestic violence conviction.
    • Gross misdemeanor and misdemeanor convictions will be reviewed on a case by case basis.
    • Although there have been recent changes to laws regarding the legal possession and consumption of marijuana, the City of North Las Vegas will continue to adhere to its professional standards and guidelines as it relates to recent and continuous use of the drug.

THE ROLE

Police Communications Call Takers are an integral part of the North Las Vegas Police Department. Police Communications Call Takers perform a variety of complex duties that includes the following: receives, screens, and prioritizes emergency 9-1-1 and non-emergency calls; enters calls for service into a Computer-Aided Dispatch System (CADS); relays and updates Police Communications personnel on the status of incidents reported by callers, such as crimes in progress, medical condition of persons, unusual situations, events, and other information that could affect dispatch or police operations; queries and enters information into criminal history databases; maintains confidentiality; demonstrates professionalism, compassion, and empathy.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of hire.
  • Must have a high school diploma or GED at the time of hire into the position.
  • Preferred Qualifications: Successful completion of law enforcement emergency response training using a multi-line telephone system. Possesses the ability to speak Spanish fluently.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • NCIC Certification within six months of hire/reclassification and be recertified as required.
  • Must possess a valid state driver's license and maintain satisfactory motor vehicle record, and the ability to obtain appropriate Nevada state driver’s license within required time frame.
  • Typing Certificate confirming Typing 45 accurate net words per minute. (Certificate dated no less than one (1) year from application/transfer date.)

SELECTION PROCESS

1. Typing Test (Pass/Fail)

Must be able to type 45 accurate net words per minute. The typing test will be provided by the department via CritiCall. In order to move on to the next step in the selection process candidates must pass the typing test.

2. CritiCall Test (Pass or Fail)

Once the application and other supporting documentation have been reviewed and it has been determined that the minimum qualifications have been met, an invitation to take the CritiCall Test may be sent. The invitation and testing instructions will be sent to the email provided on the application. The CritiCall Test is a computer-based test that is used for the Police Communications Call Taker position. The test measures job-related skills that are necessary for this position. The CritiCall Test modules may include:

  • Cross Referencing
  • Memory Recall
  • Prioritization
  • Map Reading
  • Reading Comprehension
  • Spelling
  • Sentence Clarity
  • Character Comparison

Candidates must achieve the required minimum score determined by the Department using a validation process. Allow 2-3 hours to complete the test. Those successfully passing the CritiCall Test, may be called for an interview.

3. Oral board interview with performance exercise (Pass/Fail)

Top qualifying candidates will then be invited to an oral interview, by appointment only. During the interview process, a performance exam will be administered.

4. Background Investigation

Includes an extensive background check, polygraph/CVSA examination, medical/drug screen exam. All top scoring candidates must pass the Background Investigation in order to move forward in the process.

BACKGROUND PROCESS & PRE EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS

Candidates for this position are subject to pre-employment screenings and employment is contingent upon these results. Pre-employment screenings may include but are not limited to: local, state, and federal criminal history checks, and may require submission of fingerprints; drug screen; and physical examinations to include a psychological evaluation.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is regularly required to work different shifts and is exposed to stress and emergency situations.
  • Working conditions are typically moderately quiet, but can be loud during periods of peak activity; work with computers in varying light and noise conditions.
  • Regular and timely attendance is required.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

All selected candidates will start at Step 1 with an hourly rate of $21.88.
