The Maryland National Capital Park & Planning Commission is one of the largest organizations servicing both Montgomery and Prince George’s counties. In both counties we manage the park systems, and in Prince George’s county we also develop the public’s recreation programs.

Under the Department of Parks & Recreation, the Facility Services Division (FSD) is the largest Division in Parks & Recreation. We provide high quality maintenance and maintenance support services for all of the parks and recreation facilities within Prince George’s County. We have six major work areas: Fleet Management, Buildings & Structures (Trade Shops), Horticulture & Forestry (Roads & Grounds), Major Maintenance & Inspection, Critical Projects (Aquatics, Sustainability, Heavy Equipment and ADA) and the Administration section.

Examples of Important Duties

This position is located in the Critical Projects section which consists of Aquatics, Sustainability, Heavy Equipment and ADA. This person performs skilled work in the repair and maintenance of electrical and mechanical pool equipment involving work of journey-level responsibility, complexity and variety. As a Pool Mechanic II, the incumbent will be responsible for: pool maintenance services for a variety of pool systems, ranging from fountains to more complex pool systems; pump replacements/repairs and repairs piping filtration systems, as well as regularly monitoring and maintaining pool chemistry according to locals/state standards. This individual will also be responsible for pre & post season maintenance for outdoor swimming pools and also preparing them for pre-opening inspections and facilitating minor repairs to the pump room systems and water slides. The incumbent will be responsible for installing gauges, plugs, strainer baskets, repairing/installing chlorinators and chemical feed tubing, re-installing deck equipment and managing, as well as performing winterization and de-winterization process. Receives EAM’s for pool mechanical repair projects; schedules repairs and preventative pool maintenance. Uses variety of manual and power tools to perform repairs or refers work to appropriate trades shop. Troubleshoots mechanical systems abnormalities by using appropriate testing devices to locate malfunctions and resolve issues in a timely manner. Instructs pool staff and provide equipment, filtration and pool chemistry. Handles hazardous chemicals such as chlorine, bromine, muriatic acid, caustic soda and test kit materials for pool setups.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or Certificate of General Educational Development (GED).
  • Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in mechanical, electrical or plumbing repair.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total four (4) years.
  • Valid Pool Operators License.
  • Valid driver's license in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations. Driver's license must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions, or points that could limit the employee's ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required by the position of assignment.
  • Depending on area of assignment, a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements may be required.
  • Pass Commission medical examination.
