The FWRI seeks a Post-baccalaureate Conservation Fellow, who is responsible for supporting programs and activities of the Conservation Science Center. The goal of this position/program is to build youth capacity to lead the conservation on New Mexico landscapes and natural resources.
Duties and Responsibilities
This 18-month position is designed as an early career capacity building apprenticeship to prepare young adults for their first position with a state/federal agency, community organization or graduate school. This position combines the development of professional skills
andlife skills and serves as a pathway for the next generation of resilient STEM leaders in New Mexico. This is a term position and fellows are expected to leave the organization after 18 months. No applicant is expected to have all the desired skills, and on-the-job learning is expected. Anyone who meets the minimum requirements is encouraged to apply.
- Co-develop and implement outdoor place-based STEM education for local youth (Grades 6-12)
- Attend and participate in relevant communities of practice, e.g., Environmental Education New Mexico public meetings, Hermit’s Peak Watershed Alliance service projects, Albuquerque Wildlife Federation service projects, PlanetWomen.org speaker series, etc.
- Crew-lead and supervise summer interns, including project planning, landowner communications, vehicle, and equipment logistics, ensuring data collection integrity, drafting landowner reports, etc.
- Support NMHU undergraduate research by providing near-peer mentorship, field expertise, trainings, and basic data analyses guidance
- Organize CSC webinar/workshop series by contacting speakers and managing logistics and invites
- Participate in external professional development training and conferences, as opportunities are available
- Participate in on-going internal professional development on science identity, DEIJ workshops, examining STEM approaches for under-served audiences, human dimensions in conservation, etc.
- Cooperate, collaborate and support NMFWRI staff as needed
- Document, compile and develop narratives about CSC programs for public information specialist
- Manage CSC photo/video/equipment/book/herbarium portfolio
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the program manager
Candidates must demonstrate the following characteristics:
Education: A Bachelor’s degree in a STEM major, or a closely related field
Experience: Strong familiarity of New Mexico culture and communities

Education: STEM graduate from NMHU
Experience: Bilingual- Spanish
Special Conditions for Eligibility
- Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver’s License. Selection of an out-of-state candidate will require possession of a valid New Mexico Driver’s License within sixty (60) days of employment
- Must be willing to occasionally work weekends, evenings, and odd hours, as required
- Must be willing to travel, at times on remote roads
- Continued employment is contingent on grant funding
- Ability to work in an outdoor environment
- Knowledge of common field techniques and data collection used in forest, rangeland, or wetland ecosystems
- Ability to engage local youth in science immersion activities
- Ability to learn about various facets in conservation
- Ability to collaborate, learn, test, and adapt techniques, approaches, and programs
- Ability to work with diverse stakeholders and community members
- Skills in basic computer software (Word, Excel, Power point, Outlook)
- Knowledge, skills, and experience of New Mexico landscapes, communities, and culture

Work is performed in an office on the campus of a regional public university, and at outdoor field sites primarily in the Mora and Gallinas watersheds. The possibility for hybrid work combining office and telework exists, if appropriate.
The mission of the FWRI is to promote practices that advance adaptive management, reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfire and improve ecosystem function. The FWRI is one of three Southwest Ecological Restoration Institutes (SWERI), with partner institutes in Arizona and Colorado, and collaborates in the Forest Restoration Triangle (FORT) with the NMHU Forestry Department, the only SAF-accredited forestry department in New Mexico, and with the New Mexico State University John T. Harrington Lab in Mora, NM.
The FWRI is located on the campus of Highlands University in historic Las Vegas, NM. Highlands University, a Hispanic Serving Institution, offers a comprehensive education to a diverse student body, and Highlands faculty are actively involved in research, service and outreach. Las Vegas is located at the foot of the picturesque Sangre de Cristo Mountains, and offers small-town charm, a healthy environment and abundant year-round outdoor recreation opportunities in nearby national forests, state parks, and wildlife refuges. Santa Fe, New Mexico’s capital, is an easy 60-minute drive to the west, and Taos and Albuquerque can be reached in less than two hours.
