The Purkis Lab in the Geosciences Department at the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric and Earth Science is seeking a Post Doctoral Associate.

Background : Bioindicators are an emerging solution for understanding reef health over meaningful timescales and foraminifera (forams) show exceptional promise. With their extended time spans, we hypothesize that foram indices can be used to separate reefs depressed by human-induced stress, which are good candidates for conservation action, from those which are naturally depauperate and therefore poorly disposed for intervention. This project will pursue 3 Specific Aims, to: [1] Develop a new array of location-specific foram indices capable of detecting historical reef stress. [2] Evolve an epifaunal foram index tuned to identify past coral-algal phase shifts in now healthy reef environments, and [3] Quantify the ability of the suite of foram indices to distinguish naturally depauperate reefs from those recently impacted by human activity.

The Dataset : To address these aims globally, we have collected 2,500 sediment samples from >1,000 reefs distributed through 15 countries on a global transect.

Job Description : The Post Doctoral Associate is expected to pick and identify forams from the global database, independently develop code for computer simulations, to perform quantitative analysis, write peer-reviewed publications, reports, and assist in the ideation of proposals.

A Ph.D. in Geoscience or relevant field is required. The successful candidate must have experience in identifying shallow-water benthic forams and a background in paleontology, computer science, GIS, remote sensing, and statistical modeling.
