Overview:
The research group of Dr. Zhongquan (Charlie) Zheng (https://engineering.usu.edu/mae/faculty/charlie-zheng/index) in Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Utah State University (USU) invites applications for a post-doctoral researcher position. The position is for one year, with possible renew for multiple years depending on performance and available funding. Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, or closely related fields. Candidates must demonstrate experiences and quality publications in computational fluid dynamics (CFD), including but not limited to, immersed-boundary methods, reduced order modeling, wall-modeled large-eddy simulation, and flow control modeling with neural-network algorithms. In addition to a clear research focus, a successful applicant will also be expected to assist Dr. Zheng in mentoring graduate and undergraduate research assistants in the group, developing externally funded research programs, and participating in activities in professional societies. Anticipated start date is July 2021.
Responsibilities:
  • Develop and debug computer programs for CFD
  • Develop reduced-order modeling for flow and aeroacoustic analysis
  • Wall-modeled LES for turbulent flow
  • Neural-network algorithms for flow control modeling
  • Assist in mentoring graduate and undergraduate research assistants
  • Help develop externally funded research programs
  • Activities in professional societies
Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or closely related fields
  • Experience in developing and debugging computer programs for CFD
  • Experience and quality publications in the research topics listed in "Responsibilities"

Employees work indoors and are protected from weather and/or contaminants, but not, necessarily, occasional temperature changes. The employee is regularly required to sit and often uses repetitive hand motions.
College/Department Highlights:
The MAE department has experienced significant growth over the past decade, with current enrollments of approximately 800 undergraduate and 100 graduate students and offers M.S. and PhD degrees in both Mechanical Engineering and Aerospace Engineering. The department currently has 17 tenured/tenure-track faculty members and 4 professors of practice, with additional part-time instructors from local industry and research institutions. Faculty research areas include fluid dynamics, flight mechanics, space dynamics, advanced materials, controls, and systems engineering with research expenditures in 2020 about $2.5M. Successful applicants may have opportunities to work closely with scientists and engineers from the USU Research Foundation Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL), one of 14 Department of Defense University Affiliated Research Centers (UARC) with annual revenues in excess of $200 million. Further, USU researchers also have access to the University of Utah Center for High Performance Computing (CHPC) facilities and the Utah Water Lab. USU is the nearest PhD-granting institution in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering to the Idaho National Laboratory, and is also in close proximity to Hill Air Force Base and other defense related organizations.
