Job Duties:

Precinct Desk Officers (PDOs) serve as the initial contact for the public within each of the four precincts. They perform administrative, security, and computerized tasks in the disposition of precinct functions; maintain precinct warrants, found/recovered property logs to determine current disposition; retrieve information from local, state and national computer files to determine suspect's prior criminal record or to determine if there are outstanding warrants; and enter summons data and booking information to update existing computer system data files. Some assignments may include processing prisoners and their property incidental to arrest. Interaction may be required with individuals who are unclean, HIV positive, intoxicated and/or use vulgar language. At times, PDOs assist police officers by performing a search of a same sex detainee. (Training will be provided to carry out these tasks.)

The PDO post requires 7-day/3-shift coverage (except for the First Precinct where PDO’s staff day and evening shifts). The 2nd precinct generally has the highest level of activity for the PDOs during the summer months. Current policy requires that PDOs rotate precincts and shifts. Every PDO is required to serve at the Second Precinct for a period of time.

As a PDO, you may be assigned to any of three shifts (day, evening, midnight) for an unspecified amount of time. While regular shifts are assigned semi-annually based on seniority, it is important to recognize that shift assignments are subject to change to meet coverage requirements.
