South Dakota State University (SDSU) Extension is searching for a Precision Livestock Extension Field Specialist I located at the SDSU West River Research and Extension in Rapid City, SD. This is a 12-month, full-time, benefit-eligible, non-faculty exempt, 100% Extension appointment and is accountable to the Agriculture and Natural Resources Program Leader and is affiliated with the Department of Animal Science. The successful candidate will specifically address precision technology and data needs of livestock producers. The Extension Field Specialist supports the SDSU Extension mission, strategic vision, and planning assumptions, complies with applicable federal and state laws and regulations, and all University policies, including Affirmative Action, and commits to the inclusion of a variety of audiences.

PURPOSE OF POSITION:
To provide strong regional and statewide leadership in delivering research-based programming in the Agriculture and Natural Resources capstone area. The Extension Field Specialist will be responsible for creating and delivering programming specific to using precision technology and associated data for livestock management. SDSU has a strong precision agriculture initiative, and has faculty and staff located West River and on campus that use a number of precision technologies for research activities. The successful candidate is expected to have experience with precision livestock technologies and an understanding of how precision technologies can be used to add value to producer operations through more informed decision making and/or increased production efficiency. Additionally, there is an expectation for understanding of data security challenges and the ability to provide data security education and solutions to technology end-users.
RESPONSIBILITIES :
The College of Agriculture, Food and Environment Sciences has precision livestock technology integrated into a number of facilities, including the Cottonwood Field Station in West River and the Cow-Calf and Swine Research and Education Centers near campus. The successful candidate is expected to develop a regionally renowned program in precision livestock technology that features producer education and training along with data security knowledge. This position will have access to precision technologies, and is expected to collaborate with faculty, staff and students in the Animal Science, Natural Resource Management, and Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Sciences departments that utilize these technologies. This position will be expected to facilitate the translational aspect of precision livestock technology from basic research to producer application. The successful candidate will be expected to develop relevant, timely programming specific to precision livestock technology and application; develop programming specific to data security concerns and solutions; develop a reputation for excellence in precision; create and publish Extension materials that align with expectations; collaborate with faculty to translate precision technologies used for research into producer application; lead, plan, and execute Extension activities and events, frequently in collaboration with other faculty and staff; lead and assist with Field Days; contribute to graduate student training; develop strong collaborations with faculty and staff across the SDSU system; develop strong relationships and collaborations with producers, industry and other stakeholders.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :
  • M.S. degree in Animal Science or closely related field by start date;
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States. Sponsorship is not available for this position;
  • Demonstrated experience working with precision technology for livestock systems;
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Demonstrated organizational and time management skills;
  • Strong interpersonal skills;
  • An understanding of accounting procedures in order to comply with state and federal funding constraints;
  • The ability to generate grants and other outside funds;
  • Experience with computer and information technologies; and
  • Valid driver’s license or ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire, and willingness to travel.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS :
  • Experience with ruminant livestock systems;
  • Experience in and/or knowledge of data security;
  • Experience translating precision technologies and/or precision data to livestock producers

South Dakota State University is the state’s largest, most comprehensive higher education institution, and serves as the Morrill Act land-grant university for South Dakota. This position will be housed at SDSU West River Research and Extension location in Rapid City, SD, with regular travel to the Cottonwood Field Station (approximately 1 ¼ hour drive). There are currently eight faculty from the departments of Natural Resource Management, Animal Science, and Plant Science, Agronomy and Horticulture housed at this location who work in many multidisciplinary, collaborative teams to address the agriculture and natural resource needs of western SD and the state. Located in the foothills of the scenic Black Hills Mountain range, Rapid City is the State’s second largest city, with a population of approximately 70,000. The city has outstanding K-12 schools, major medical facilities, parks, and cultural, outdoor, and tourist amenities. Rapid City is located on the western border of South Dakota and is 400 miles west of the SDSU main campus in Brookings.
