An organization within Northrop Grumman’s Payload and Ground Systems (PGS) division, Space craft Components is a leading designer, producer, and supplier of spacecraft components that power and enable satellites of all classes. Northrop Grumman Space Systems is seeking a Principal or Senior Principal Engineer to join our Engineering team. This position will be based in San Diego, CA, but may be located at other major site locations in Devens, MA, Oxnard, CA, or Goleta, CA.

Role and Responsibilities:

The Engineer will work with the Business Unit (BU) engineering team to develop and implement design standards. This individual will be responsible for researching existing design standards including design approaches, criteria, and tools used across the business and identifying strengths and weaknesses of the various toolsets. This team member will develop and document design standards by product line and/or value stream, including developing and maintaining manuals and training materials for design best-practice focus areas such as manufacturability, cost, test, etc.

Using critical thinking and problem-solving skills, the Engineer will consolidate existing Operating Unit (OU) design standards into overarching BU procedures, whereby their practical application within the Engineering functional group supports high level business strategies.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate proficiency in the following areas:

  • GD&T and industry design and drafting standards.

  • Strong background in technical writing and business execution procedures.

  • Ability to carefully analyze complex problems and develop innovative solutions.

  • Broad knowledge of industry practices.

  • Ensures solutions are consistent with organization objectives.

  • Must be able to work independently and have strong organizational skills.

  • Skillfully perform complex professional tasks and apply regular use of ingenuity and innovation.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to effectively and clearly present technical approaches and findings.

This position may be filled as a Principal Engineer (Level 3) or Senior Principal Engineer (Level 4) depending upon candidate education, experience and qualifications.


Basic Qualifications for a Level 3:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM discipline from an accredited university and 5+ years of engineering, process development and/or project management experience OR Master’s Degree in STEM discipline with 3+ year experience

  • Experience with NX and Team Center

  • GD&T and industry design and drafting standards

  • Strong background in technical writing and business execution procedures.

  • Ability to obtain DoD Secret clearance


Basic Qualifications for a Level 4:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM discipline from an accredited university and 9+ years of engineering, process development and/or project management experience OR Master’s Degree in STEM discipline with 7+ year experience OR PhD in STEM discipline with 4+ year experience

  • Experience with NX and Team Center

  • GD&T and industry design and drafting standards

  • Strong background in technical writing and business execution procedures.

  • Ability to obtain DoD Secret clearance

Salary range:

T03: 95,000.00 - 142,400.00

T04: 117,700.00 - 176,500.00

This position reports to San Diego, CA, USA, however, you are able to work from any of the additional 5 locations listed above.



Salary Range: $95,000 USD - $142,400 USD
Salary Range 2: $117,700 USD - $176,500 USD


Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
