Description

Under the direction of the Coordinator of Student Health Services, the Mental Health and Wellness Specialist is responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating a comprehensive student mental health and wellness outreach and promotion program, to include related college health topics. The Mental Health and Wellness Specialist will work collaboratively with the rest of the SHS team, and campus partners to lead the outreach and promotion, deliver student health education, encourage peer-to-peer support, promote campus policy/systems/environmental changes to support student health and wellness, and to help support and improve overall operations of SHS. The Mental Health and Wellness Specialist is responsible for utilizing best practices in public health to create a campus environment that supports students in their well-being and academic success, reduce stigma and barriers to seeking health services, and promote positive student health behaviors. This is a temporary position unless authorized to extend for a longer period depending on the need and/or performance

Example of Duties

40% - Program Development

Develops, implements and evaluates effectiveness of mental health and wellness promotion / education programs using individual, group and population level/environmental management strategies to help improve outcomes for students.

Researches best practices in mental health and wellness promotion strategies and remains up to date with evidence-informed and evidence-based interventions.

Assists Coordinator with conducting needs assessments, compiles program and student data, and prepares reports to aid in evaluating initiative and program effectiveness. Recommends and assists in changes or improvements.

Demonstrates knowledge of health promotion, behavior change, and public health theories and models; evidence-informed health promotion programs; and environmental change strategies / socio-ecological models.

Organize, plan, implement, and evaluate events to address different awareness months.

Organize, plan, implement and evaluate policies, programs and services to strengthen college and community capacity to effectively address sexual assault related issues, including sexual health and relationship violence/healthy relationships in order to improve student health and resiliency.

30% - Outreach & Community Engagement

Lead tabling events

Manage bulletin boards

Help create and update flyers and handouts

Facilitates and engages in orientation events as a representative of Student Health Services.

Provides backup support to other Student Health Services staff during wellness workshops/presentations.

Represents the MPC Student Health Services to community organizations.

Develops a strong network of relationships with the CCC constituents (e.g., Student Services, Athletics, student clubs, academic deans and programs, new student orientation, study abroad) to maintain and develop programming partnerships, and facilitate broader campus discussions to coordinate a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to health and wellness for students.

Actively participates in departmental, divisional, and / or campus committees or workgroups as requested and approved.

20% - Student Development

Demonstrates skills to train, mentor and supervise student employees, student volunteers/interns, and peer educators.

Support student interns or peer educators with ongoing outreach strategies.

Meets / consults individually with student clients on various topics that impact college students health and wellness and makes appropriate referrals to campus and community resources.

Using an intersectional and collaborative approach, present targeted prevention strategies to identified risk populations including LGBTQ+ students, students with disabilities, students of color, athletes, and other under-served populations.

Works closely with Student Health Services staff and other campus / community partners to foster and maintain a positive working relationship to facilitate effective and efficient student referrals.

Establishes and maintains relationships to outreach to new students; includes presentations/workshops for campus programs, student club organizations, student resource centers, classrooms, tabling events, etc.

10% - Facilitate Campus Mental Health and Wellness Communication

Establishes a robust social media presence. Coordinates the creation and distribution of marketing and promotional materials for all assigned programs and initiatives.

Provides consultation to campus units, leaders, faculty and staff on campus data and public health recommendations.

Identifies opportunities to infuse mental health and well-being policies and practices throughout campus.

Works closely with the campus leadership to respond to emerging issues and interacts effectively with on and off campus partners.

Works closely with campus leadership and partners to disseminate campus wide mental health and well-being information.

Perform other job related duties as assigned

Front office duties may be necessary at times to maintain student access to health and wellness resources during our published business hours.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training

Knowledge of health education theories, research, and program assessment; planning, design, implementation, and evaluation of health education programs; and industry standards for the delivery of health education in higher education.

Experience interacting with diverse individuals of various ethnic, racial, social, cultural, economic, political, sexual orientation and gender identities.

Ability to maintain strict confidence of confidential information and perform a wide range of duties that require tact, sensitivity, independent judgment, diplomacy, flexibility and discretion.

Acute attention to detail.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Advanced Degree in related field*

Employment experience in Higher Education.

  • Related fields and experience include but are not limited to public health, health education, social work, psychology, sociology, ethnic and gender studies, human development, education, etc.
PHYSICAL EFFORT/WORK ENVIRONMENT

Moderate to heavy physical effort; occasional standing or walking; periodic handling of moderate weight parcels up to 50 pounds; frequent full body exertion. Indoor or outdoor work environment; exposure to environmental extremes.

Work Schedule / Supplemental Information

This position is designated as a professional expert short-term, non-continuous employee

Time: 28 Hours per Week

Days of the Week: Mon-Fri, all teaching days to include summer

Shift Includes: Day shift, 9am-3:30pm Mon-Thur, 9am-1pm Fri, some flexibility at times is needed outside of these hours to assist with front office duties and events.

In-person hours are required on the Monterey Campus.
