Position Summary:

The National Committee on American Foreign Policy (NCAFP) is seeking a full-time Program Assistant who has demonstrated interest in US foreign policy issues and international relations. Much of the NCAFP’s work is focused on the Asia-Pacific region via the Forum on Asia Pacific Security. The Forum holds regular Track II conferences and workshops among former officials, scholars, and experts on security and foreign policy issues in the Asia Pacific region, including cross-Taiwan Strait relations, US-China relations, the North Korean nuclear issue, and US alliance relations. Track II diplomacy consists of informal, off-the-record dialogue between non-government officials designed to fill the gaps in the official dialogue. The NCAFP also holds both virtual and in person public programs.

The Program Assistant will be responsible for assisting with a broad range of administrative tasks, supporting events and conferences, and contributing to all aspects of NCAFP activities with the majority of the work focused on the Forum on Asia Pacific Security’s activities. The Program Assistant will report directly to the Forum Deputy Director under the direction of the CEO. This is a full-time (40 hours/week) hybrid position with approximately two to three days per week working the mid-town Manhattan office and remote work on the remaining days. The position, however, is likely to be full time in the office in the near future.

Responsibilities:

  • Administrative Support: assist with scheduling and coordinating office calendar, track program-related expenses and budgets, maintain and update contact information through a web-based database.
  • Conference Planning: reserve events and meeting space, book travel and hotel for participants, process payments and reimbursements, and arrange other details for the Forum’s conferences and events; collaborate with Forum staff on day-of-event logistics, such as greeting guests and notetaking.
  • Intellectual Support: participate in regular team meetings, communications, and planning efforts; compiles, reads, and organizes written material into briefing memos and summaries; assist with drafting of event abstracts; identify potential speakers and conference participants; help with editing and proofreading of publications.
  • Digital Outreach: draft and post content for social media platforms like Twitter and LinkedIn; work with NCAFP staff to update relevant web pages, including writing and editing summaries of events and reports; edit video recordings of NCAFP events for publication on the NCAFP website and YouTube.

Skills & Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree required with a preferred focus on international affairs, political science, public policy, and the Asia-Pacific region.
  • 1 to 3 years of professional experience in the nonprofit, think tank, and/or public policy sectors (previous administrative and/or internship experience accepted), with demonstrated interest and knowledge of US foreign policy and the security, economics, and/or politics of the Asia-Pacific region.
  • Self-motivated and eager to learn, with proven track record in managing multiple projects simultaneously and demonstrated ability to work efficiently and collaboratively.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Strong writing, communications, research, organizational, and computer skills.
  • Significant level of poise, diplomacy, and maturity in dealing with internal and external contacts.
  • Applicants for this position must be available for immediate employment and possess current US work authorization valid for a minimum of two years from start date.

The National Committee on American Foreign Policy (NCAFP) is a non-profit policy institute based in New York City that fulfills its mission through Track I½ and Track II diplomacy. These closed-door and off-the-record conferences provide opportunities for senior US and foreign officials, subject experts, and scholars to engage in discussions designed to defuse conflict, build confidence, and resolve problems.

Compensation and Benefits:

Salary range: $45,000 - $60,000. Compensation within this range is commensurate with experience.

The position begins in March 2023. The NCAFP offers a comprehensive benefits package, including employer-paid medical, vision and dental insurance, an employer-matched retirement plan, in addition to 3 weeks of annual leave. The Program Assistant must be based in New York City by their agreed start date—no relocation benefits are available.
