Program Assistant, Independence Seaport Museum, Philadelphia

Hours: Full Time; Must be available for nights and weekends

Wage: $18/hour

Description: The Program Assistant will lead and teach seasonal public programs in the museum and in the community. They may also assist with other various education and community programming needs. In the summer, the Program Assistant will oversee Paddle Penn’s Landing (PPL) dock activities and staff. The position requires someone who is skilled, friendly, approachable, outgoing, and a creative thinker with a positive attitude that can work independently and adapt to changes quickly.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience teaching all ages, especially young children
  • Experience or interest in teaching environmental science, history or social studies
  • Managerial or supervisory experience preferred
  • Considerable on-water experience required including boating, swimming, diving, fishing, etc.
  • Lifeguard certification, boating license, canoe/kayak/sailing certificates are a plus
  • First aid/CPR/AED certifications needed, swift water rescue and wilderness first aid desirable
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with other educators and Museum staff
  • Flexibility, ability and desire to learn, and a good sense of humor
  • Ability to work nights and weekends as necessary
  • Upon hiring, a PA Child Abuse History Clearance and State Criminal Record Check are required
  • Must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Fully vaccinated is defined as at least two weeks after your final dose. Medical and religious exemptions will apply.

Duties:

  • Lead select youth programming
  • Lead programs and tours on a variety of subjects for K-12 field trip groups and occasional adult groups.
  • Lead seasonal community programming in the Citizen Science Lab on select weekends
  • Lead community programing during fairs, festivals, outreach programs, and other off-site events as needed.
  • Assist with managing waterfront staff hiring, training, performance evaluations, and oversees day-to-day operations
  • Act as summer lead dock supervisor and fills in as on-water staff waterfront camp counselor as needed
  • Handle administrative work, such as tracking hours and attendance for PPL staff
  • Assist Education, Curatorial, Workshop on the Water, and Dock departments with programming content for Camps and other programs as needed
  • Gather, maintain, and monitor inventory of supplies needed for programming regularly
  • Maintain calm, positive, and organized atmosphere using classroom management skills
  • Assist with weekend and evening public programming events, as needed
  • Serve as gallery interpreter as needed
  • Other duties as assigned pertaining this job description
