Summer Portals at Hotchkiss School includes a wide variety of academic and recreational offerings to rising 6th through 9th grade students, many of whom are experiencing a residential learning experience for the first time. Students come to Summer Portals from diverse nationalities and cultures, seeking academic enrichment and exploration.

The Hotchkiss School is eager to accept applications from individuals who are excited to support an inclusive and warm working and learning community for students and employees from a wide array of backgrounds and experiences.

GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Theatre Program Director will develop an interactive curriculum for this two-week program that introduces students to the fundamental skills of acting and stagecraft. They are responsible for teaching the class and maintaining a safe, organized, and positive environment for learning in which students are encouraged to take creative risks while collaborating constructively with each other. The Program Director will supervise a Summer Fellow who will be assigned to assist in the instruction and activities of the class. The Program Director will guide and instruct students as they prepare a final program culminating experience, one which demonstrates their mastery of new skills learned and confidence gained.

The theatre program focuses on learning and growing as artists, building ensembles through fun games, improvisation, voice and movement workshops, as well as through scene work. Students should acquire and/or strengthen skills promoting confidence in performing in front of an audience, body awareness, vocal production, and participating as part of an ensemble working towards a staged performance, while also acquiring self-discipline; empathy in giving and receiving constructive feedback, as well as honing self-reflection and listening skills.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• In advance of Program dates, submit curriculum and syllabus that considers both group-based and individually guided activities and content;
• Resource and provide program educational material for procurement before the program commences,
• Participate in Summer Portals faculty orientation, which includes online professional boundaries training in Sexual Harassment Prevention, and CT Department of Children and Families Mandated Reporter Training.
• Guide and support the curriculum and class lesson planning during the program,
• Instruct students observing their academic level, conducting activities to support their skill development; helping them explore and take creative risks.
• Counsel, support, and guide students as needed.
• Identify and communicate with the Dean of Summer Programs, any emergent need that warrants immediate support, ensuring student safety and well-being.

• Portals Faculty are expected to eat communally with students.
• At the end of the program, provide a written assessment commenting on each student’s progress through the program, describing their growth, attitude, effort as well as achievement.

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

• A four-year College Degree is required,
• Qualified applicants will have demonstrated successful teaching and/or professional experience in the performing arts, relevant to a middle school or high school curriculum.
• Possess excellent time management and organizational skills needed to oversee the program and other instructor colleagues if assigned.
• Possess strong communication skills that effectively promote inclusive and respectful behavior amongst students and respectful exchange amongst colleagues.
• Friendly attitude and approachable demeanor that exhibits compassion, empathy, and patience for students.

PHYSICAL WORK CONDITIONS

• Faculty are expected to perform work on campus in the presence of students,
• Must be able to maintain a stationary position and/or traverse while performing essential responsibilities,
• Must be able to communicate and converse as well as distinguish and observe.
• Given the persistent risks of the spread of the Covid-19 virus – all employees of the School are required to be fully vaccinated by their first day of work as a condition of employment. Employees who are unable to receive the vaccine due to disability, medical condition, or a sincerely held belief may request an exemption, which will be reviewed by the School to determine the availability of any reasonable accommodations.
