Since its founding in 2011 by 25 physics teachers, STEMteachersNYC has grown to include all STEM subjects at all levels, and has presented over 300 professional development workshops attended by 6,000 teachers. Its professional learning community currently numbers more than 1500 teachers from the NY Metro area and around the country. About the Role

This is a part-time job expected to require 25-35 hours a week, with benefits, with the possibility of expansion to full-time for the right candidate. STEMteachersNYC is seeking an outgoing, creative, organized individual with teaching and management experience - a good listener and communicator who takes initiative and believes in the central role of supporting teachers on their paths of professional growth – to help our innovative, teacher-led professional learning community continue to grow and innovate.

The Program Manager will report directly to and work closely with the Executive Director. The Program Manager will also be expected to interact and work effectively with the President, Development VP, Marketing Manager, Finance Manager, and the Program Committee of the Board.

Responsibilities and duties will include developing, scheduling, and producing professional development workshops at a variety of sites and on-line, including EXPO 2023; expanding our reach, including to school administrators for workshops tailored to their staffs; nurturing partnerships; and enhancing the diversity of workshop offerings. A typical week might include meetings with staff and Executive Director, participating in leader meetings and one or more scheduled workshops, responding to emails, developing workshop descriptions, and reaching out in-person and virtually to new schools to learn about needs in their communities. Much of the work will be online, including via Zoom, with a gradually increasing percentage of time in face-to-face vs. online interactions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provides materials/operations support for in-person and virtual workshops at locations across five boroughs (City College, Brooklyn College, Queens Public Library, etc) and on Zoom. During the academic year, in-person STEMteachersNYC workshops generally occur monthly on weekends, from 9am - 12pm, or until 3pm for full day workshops. The Program Manager must arrive at 8am or earlier to begin setup and registration, and stay until one hour afterward to clean up. Virtual workshops can take place in the afternoons, evenings or on weekends.
  • Manages annual Summer STEM Institute. STEMteachersNYC holds 10-12 more intensive summer workshops varying in length from 2 days to 2 weeks. In addition to materials/operations support, summer program management includes keeping track of registrations and working with the Finance Manager to track invoices and POs.
  • Supports the Internship program. STEMteachersNYC welcomes 4-10 high school interns each year. The Program Manager works collaboratively with other staff in organizing and supporting this program.
  • Supports the development of Community Learning Network hubs, physical locations where workshops, working groups, meetings of our teacher community and interaction with students, faculty and staff of partners take place. Over the next few years, STEMteachersNYC program strategy will focus on creating additional in-person support across the five boroughs, in the form of a community learning network, that brings our organizational community closer to the communities in which our teachers teach, to ensure relevance and responsiveness of our programs to their needs. Current hubs include Brooklyn College, City College and Queens Public Library.

Additional Responsibilities

Workshops

  • Regularly participates in our workshops in order to get a broad understanding of offerings and leadership styles and skills.
  • Attends and co-facilitates quarterly program committee meetings of the Board.
  • Develops workshop descriptions with workshop leaders, posts events through necessary channels, and sets up workshop events on Eventbrite.
  • Communicates in a timely manner with participants and schools, by email, phone and/or Zoom.
  • Writes and sends out welcome and thank you letters to all participants, manages Zoom event set up and recording, and prepares CTLE certificates.
  • Maintains the workshop Masterlist.

Community/Membership

  • Personally connects with NYC schools, teachers, PTAs, and administrators to communicate our work, gauge need and discuss contract possibilities for workshops.
  • Develops existing and new contacts with local and national STEM teacher networks; Monitors community Google Group sub-threads; Develops and maintains VIP list and personal communications; Attends 3-4 monthly teacher working groups.
  • Contributes to social media story content, collaborating with our marketing manager.
  • Maintains attendee and member databases.

Qualifications and Experience

Required

  • BA in a STEM subject or a STEM education subject.
  • Classroom teaching and/or informal STEM teaching experience.
  • Understanding of NYC/NYS K12 science standards and general educational landscape.
  • Flexible communicator. Comfortable personally reaching out to teachers, administrators and PTA representatives to communicate our work.
  • Ability to interact productively with a wide variety of people, from fellow staff to teachers and teacher-leaders to principals to board members.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and remotely as well as in person.

Preferred

  • Familiarity with our organization and our programs.
  • MA in a STEM subject or a STEM education subject.
  • Job experience that shows management or organizational ability.
  • Well networked within the formal and/or informal education communities in NYC.
  • Social media content writing; maintaining a teaching and/or STEM blog or other social media presence a plus.
  • Membership management.
  • Experience developing professional learning workshops and/or with Professional Learning Communities.

Requirements

STEMteachersNYC has multiple in-person locations in New York City where we run our programs, but currently has no physical office. Therefore, a computer, reliable internet service and a smartphone are requirements of the job. The successful candidate will reside in New York City.

Compensation

Competitive, depending on experience and hours worked. Includes benefits.
