PROGRAM MANAGER
SUMMER SEARCH, BAY AREA (SAN JOSE)
While young people from low-income communities – who are disproportionately young people of color – face systemic inequities in school, in the workforce, and in life, they possess unique strengths, tremendous potential. When provided with support and resources, these young people fulfill their potential and achieve their goals.
Through a combination of mentoring and transformative experiences, Summer Search supports young people to successfully transition from adolescence into adulthood. Our youth build toolkits for navigating and challenging systemic barriers to higher education and career opportunities, while also experiencing holistic support and unconditional care from our staff, their peers, and our community.
THE OPPORTUNITY
Summer Search Bay Area is seeking a Program Manager to join its High School Program (HSP) team. This position ensures that staff are supported to work collaboratively with their students and our program team. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced people manager and coach to enhance the quality of our programming for students, advance the impact of Summer Search in the local community, particularly the South Bay region, and join a team that is committed to learning, social and racial equity, and the students we serve.
Specifically, responsibilities for the Program Manager include:
People Management and Staff Development
  • Support program team working in San Jose and Hayward by grounding in team values, and advocating for team needs.
  • Manage 4-5 HSP mentors through individualized supervision, performance management and evaluation, and on-going training. Provide nuanced and holistic coaching centering in well-being, critical consciousness, and student support in 1:1 and group settings.
  • Support the mentoring work, data management, and outcomes for all students served.
  • Partner with mentors and students throughout their Summer Search journey – inclusive of their education, summer experiences, well-being, and ensuring students feel supported in their growth and cared for throughout their Summer Search experience.
  • Collaborate with local and National leadership to develop and implement trainings for program staff to support their work with students focused primarily on well-being, critical mentoring, group mentoring, adolescent development and identity development.
  • Collaborate with local and National leadership to advocate for needs of mentors and coordinators, especially the unique needs of the South Bay region.
  • Continue integration of our well-being & race, equity, diversity & inclusion practices into our daily work.
Project Management and Program Operations
  • Support the execution of daily high school program operations, collaborating closely with the Director of Outreach and HSP and National Program Team, and in response to student and team needs.
  • Identify and pursue opportunities to innovate and improve program operations and performance, including implementing systems for assessing program quality.
  • Ensure a high-quality data culture by establishing clear expectations for accurate and timely data collection by program teams.
  • Ensure the timely response to student safety issues related to their physical, social, and emotional well-being by partnering with teammates in a student-centered approach.
Student Engagement & Program Facilitation
  • Support the program team with direct student support and coverage needs.
  • Support with supervision and implementation of group mentoring program in schools and community locations in the South Bay region.
  • Lead program team in creating and developing program initiatives. Program initiatives may include student celebrations and events, student enrollment, summer experience support and family engagement.
  • Support in student outreach in San Jose and Hayward schools and develop relationships with school staff to support in implementing programming on campus.
  • Provide support both nationally and locally for Summer on-call service during summer experiences.
WHO YOU ARE
We are seeking a Program Manager grounded in our values of centering relationships, well-being, critical consciousness, and responsiveness to the needs of our team and our communities. Specifically, the Program Manager will bring:
  • EXPERIENCE: At least 4 years of work experience, inclusive of 1-2 years in a management role, at a youth development, educational, or other social service organization that serves low-income communities. Experience supervising and coaching frontline staff working with youth preferred. Demonstrated understanding of crisis management, ideally with youth populations is a plus.
  • PROJECT MANAGEMENT: Works in an organized manner to achieve goals and objectives. Able to balance competing priorities when managing projects. Strong implementer with the ability to execute against plans, recognize unexplored opportunities, utilize data to inform decision making, and set priorities. Able to achieve project goals with a team as well as an individual.
  • TEAMWORK AND COLLABORATION: Inspires and fosters commitment, connection, enthusiasm and trust. Facilitates cooperation and motivates staff to accomplish goals. Manages and resolves conflicts and handles interpersonal issues constructively.
  • CRITICAL CONCIOUSNESS: Recognizes sociopolitical barriers and understands the systems of oppression that operate in day-to-day lives of stakeholders e.g. students/participants, staff members, community partners, and alumni. Professional and/or personal experience of helping teams engage around Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB).
  • ADAPTABILITY: Assesses information that is available and takes calculated risk. Stays productive and solutions-oriented in the face of change and unfamiliar scenarios. Remains curious and flexible and demonstrates a willingness to learn new ways to accomplish work. Ability to understand and navigate different perspectives.
  • ACCOUNTABILTY: Holds self and others responsible for process, decisions, actions, and commitments to results and to drive high-quality outcomes for students. Is responsive to needs of stakeholders e.g. student/program participants, staff members, community partners, alumni, volunteers.
  • TECHNOLOGY SKILLS: Proficiency in detailed data tracking and management; experience using a database with experience with Salesforce a plus.
  • LANGUAGE SKILLS: Proficiency in Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin or Vietnamese is a plus.
  • Familiarity with or experience working within San Jose and/or Hayward schools a plus.
LOCATION AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Work hours are Mon-Fri 10am-6pm (three days) and 11am-7pm (two days) with occasional weekend and evening special events. This Program Manager role focused on the San Jose region and will occasionally require travel to our Oakland office (1-2 times month). Frequent travel to partner high schools and other locations for student meetings and events will also be required, particularly in East San Jose and Hayward. Applicants must have access to a car and a satisfactory driving record in order to fulfill travel obligations to be present at schools.
Summer Search requires all its staff be vaccinated against COVID-19. Employees who are unable to be vaccinated due to a medical reason or sincerely held religious objection may be able to qualify for an exemption, consistent with state and federal law.
SALARY AND BENEFITS
This is an exempt position with a starting salary range of $71,466- $77,886. Summer Search is committed to transparent, equitable compensation practices. Salaries are benchmarked using current market data and salary bands are created to demonstrate the growth potential within the band. The hiring manager works with the Talent Team to place all hires appropriately within the band. We strive to maintain internal equity in compensation, while also considering prior experience.
