Job Overview

Public Safety Dispatchers are in a position as a trusted public safety professional with the primary assignment of performing work in the protection of life, property, and the environment through emergency communication and dispatching services. They are the first first responder at an emergency scene and the work they do enhances the safety of the public and police, fire and EMS personnel.

Public Safety Dispatchers are in a non-supervisory role and report to the 911 Supervisor and Assistant 911 Supervisor.

Role and Responsibilities
Duties and Responsibilities are intended to be descriptive and not restrictive. A dispatcher may perform any of the duties listed, however, these examples do not include all of the duties that a dispatcher may be expected to perform.

  • Answers incoming emergency and non-emergency calls for assistance via telephone and radio
  • Utilize 911 system including automatic number identification (ANI), automatic location information (ALI), telecommunications devices for the deaf (TTY/TDD), Text to 911 and Rapid SOS; may be required to access foreign language interpreter services for non-English speaking callers.
  • Utilizes a multi-line telephone system to answer administrative calls and respond to requests for assistance or information.
  • Verify location of calls using maps including electronic mapping software or traditional paper maps.
  • Obtains, verifies and documents in CAD, the location of the emergency, the name and telephone number of the caller, the nature and severity of the emergency and obtain any other appropriate information needed to make a full assessment of the circumstances.
  • Determines the appropriate type of agency(ies) to respond to a specific emergency or call for assistance.
  • Operates two-way radio, telephone, computerized, or other electronic equipment to dispatch appropriate law enforcement, fire, or emergency medical units to the scene of an emergency.
  • Maintains a reassuring and calming manner with callers in order to obtain required information; persuades emergency callers to stay on the line until emergency services arrive.
  • Coordinates police, fire, emergency medical services responses to incidents.
  • Maintains and facilitates communication with responding units by receiving and relaying information; including confidential information and situational awareness updates to enhance responder safety.
  • Tracks, monitors and maintains a constant awareness of the availability and status of police, fire and EMS units in the field.
  • Ability to learn, speak, read and understand a variety of codes and signals
  • Obtains and maintains current Emergency Medical Dispatch certification and utilizes dispatch protocols to provide lifesaving emergency medical instructions to callers prior to the arrival of emergency personnel.
  • Obtains and Maintains a current Law Enforcement Dispatch and Fire Service Dispatch certification and utilizes dispatch protocols to provide precautionary instructions to enhance the personal safety of persons and/or to minimize the loss of property, prior to the arrival of fire, police, or other assistance.
  • Maintains valid system certification and makes entries, inquiries, cancellations, and modifications of records in various systems and databases such as the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and Indiana Data and Communications System (IDACS).
  • Enters, updates and retrieves information from a variety of computer systems in a timely manner.
  • Refers non-emergency situations to other appropriate public or private agencies.
  • Monitors severe weather, relays imminent weather warnings issued by the National Weather Service and activates tornado sirens when necessary.
  • Ability to understand the rules, regulations, policies, and procedures which affect his or her job
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Willing to provide the most courteous customer service that he or she is capable of giving
  • Ability to follow instructions and respond to management and supervisory direction
  • Willingness to help achieve the department’s vision, uphold departmental core values and adhere to the departmental code of ethics
  • Regularly score 80% or higher on Quality Assurance reviews and show continuous improvement where indicated.
  • Attends ongoing training as required.
  • Performs other work as assigned by the 911 Supervisor or Assistant 911 Supervisor.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree
  • Ability to pass a background check
