Job Purpose

The Quality Engineer position is a multifunction role responsible for projects of variable scope and complexity working both within and outside the organization.

The role of the Quality Engineer is to evaluate existing processes, improve quality and consistency, and to help develop best practices within the production process and business systems. The Quality Engineer will support the maintenance of Quality Management System (QMS) in compliance with ISO 9001 and ISO 13485 requirements. Assist in tracking, recording, and maintaining external, internal and supplier audits, corrective actions, quality measuring and monitoring metrics, management review, and other elements of the QMS. The role will also support the organization in continuous improvement and lean initiatives.

The Quality Engineer works closely with the Production team to pursue operational excellence through identifying, developing, and delivering innovative solutions directed to constantly improving process capability and production volume while maintaining and improving quality standards. This role will also occasionally interact with external customers and suppliers on technical issues as required.

Key Responsibilities

Process Metrics and Monitoring: Support production processes and improvement plans for assigned areas or projects within the company through definition, monitoring, and reporting of process metrics. The elements of activity may include:

  • Product Design/Manufacturing Process Controls
  • Process Risk Analysis/FMEA
  • Preventive Maintenance Identification
  • Equipment Qualifications / Calibration
  • Process Validations and monitoring
  • Software Validations
  • Lead or coordinate receiving inspection processes and data analysis
  • Process Audits.

Quality systems development and support:

  • In conjunction with CAPA owners, facilitate CAPAs through resolution
  • In conjunction with Customer Complaint owners, facilitate Complaints through closure
  • Support maintenance of calibration system for tools and equipment used in the acceptance of product or materials
  • Assist in tracking, recording, and maintaining external, internal audits to confirm conformance
  • Establish and update QMS procedures in compliance with requirements
  • Lead or facilitate Continuous Improvement and Lean projects within site
  • Process owner for NCM (Non-conforming material) process, and MRB activity
  • Provides work direction to Quality Technician(s) for various projects in the group

Inspection Subject Matter Expert: This role will be a resource regarding:

  • Sample size determination
  • Data analysis and reporting

Inspection support: When appropriate, on an as needed basis, this individual will also support inspection duties execute measurements and inspections according to the agreed upon inspection plans.

Product development team participation: Participate in development of new and existing products through:

  • Establishing Product Quality Plans
  • Developing receiving inspection and in-process instructions
  • Supplier qualification or audits

Document and Record Control: Coordinate document and record control procedures for site. Responsibilities may include Document Center maintenance and improvement for effective document and record control practices.

Education and/or Experience

  • AS + 7 years’ experience / BS + 3 years’ experience / MS + 2 years’ experience in manufacturing engineering, process engineering, or quality control.
  • Strong and creative problem-solving skills
  • Practical hands-on experience with process improvements using quality tools. Experience should include practical familiarity with basic lean concepts (standard work, 5S, Kanban systems, etc.).
  • Must have ability to read and interpret mechanical/electrical drawings and specifications/requirements and use good judgment, with ability to analyze situation, etc.
  • Ability to use measuring tools including callipers, micrometers, pin gauges, height gauges, radius gauges, protractors, and dial indicators, etc.
  • Must have excellent written, presentation and verbal communication skills & be proficient in Word, Excel, MS Project and/or other appropriate software.
  • Experience with analysis tools (D-FMEA or P-FMEA), Design of Experiments (DOE), process capability assessment and development, error-proofing, six sigma, and Statistical Process Control (SPC)
