Quality Manager

Supervisory responsibilities: Supervise and work with a project team of laborers and operators to ensure the operation of the on-site compost facility meets its production goals and operates in accordance with regulations and company safety policies.

Position type and expected hours of work: This position reports to the Technical Manager. This is a full time position and the hours of work will depend on the job event and manager. Evening, night and weekend work will be required as job duties demand.

Summary:

Essential functions:

  • Develop the operational strategy with the technical manager to ensure overall compost facility production and regulatory compliance. Adjust strategy and daily operational activities to meet these objectives.
  • Lead and supervise all day-to-day tasks for the operation of the Gore Cover composting system including; receiving, mixing, loading/flipping/unloading, active composting, curing, screening, covering/uncovering monitoring, record keeping (production and regulatory) and maintenance.
  • Hire project employees; communicate expectations, conduct new-hire safety training; direct the work schedules of employees; report weekly time to corporate HR; enforce company employment policies and communicate discipline to corporate HR
  • Work and direct employees in safety sensitive areas; i.e., around heavy equipment, electrical panels, traffic zones, while performing maintenance, etc
  • Serve as the primary staff with responsibility to operate the complete composting system to produce finished product(s) that meet company specifications, achieves/maintains regulatory compliance and end-user marketing goals.
  • Coordinate with subcontractors for project support and maintenance activities; give direction to the subcontractors, track project costs and manage their daily role in the project
  • Ensure that the facility operates consistently to meet client (City of New York) expectations (regulatory compliance, production capacity, equipment operations, maintenance, and grounds)
  • Daily inspect and maintain multiple pieces of equipment and facility infrastructure. Ensure a preventative maintenance plan is in place, records of maintenance tasks are kept and report to the technical manager and Site Manager. Work with staff and subcontractors to ensure needed repairs are done correctly, economically and timely.
  • Collect and record multiple biological, physical and chemical data of the feedstocks, composting process and end-product(s). Including temperature, bulk density, % solids, respiration, stability etc... Operate and maintain the instruments and tools needed to support these tasks
  • Additional responsibilities to include oversight and management of the automated compost bagging facility and associated operations.
  • As directed, conduct comprehensive tours of the facility and participate in operational discussions with identified parties.
  • Complete daily operations reports, safety meetings and time reporting paperwork.
  • Ensure multiple work areas around the facility and office areas are kept clean
  • Maintain professional appearance, and use personal protection equipment (PPE) when required

Competency: Must understand the principals of composting, be detail oriented, computer literate, accurate data management, flexible and dependable. Strong technical, written and oral communication skills. Willingness to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse parties.

Work environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee works in outside weather conditions and with organic wastes. The employee will be exposed to hot, cold, and wet conditions, as well as potential fumes, airborne particles, odors and conditions typically found around large volumes of organic waste materials.

Physical demands: To successfully perform the essential functions of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk, climb and hear. The employee is constantly required to use hands and fingers to feel, handle or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to balance, stoop, knee, crouch, crawl and walk. The employee must occasionally lift. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

Travel: Occasional travel depending on job assigned.

Preferred education and experience: High School Diploma or GED required with some post-secondary level preferred. Must have valid driver’s license.Must have or will attain within 1 year the US Composting Council (USCC), Certified Compost Operation Manager (CCOM) credentials. Experience in operating composting, agriculture and/or construction equipment. Experience working with compost and the composting process.
