Hatch is currently seeking a highly motivated Rail Vehicle Mechanical Engineer - Interiors to join our North American Infrastructure group to support work in Ambler, Pennsylvania.


In this role, the ideal candidate will have excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work well in a team environment. Candidates must have knowledge of core mechanical engineering concepts and have a minimum of 5 years of professional experience, with at least 2 years primarily in design of rail car interiors. Experience working in the rail industry is required. A PE registration is desirable but not required.


As the successful candidate, you will:

  • Assist in the review of design submittals, and preparation of detailed descriptions of the review findings for rail car interiors including flammability smoke emission and toxicity (FST), materials, seats, flooring and ADA compliance.
  • Review drawing submittals and prepare descriptions of review findings.
  • Participate in technical working sessions to address issues raised by clients.
  • Inspect and review prototype and first article equipment and prepare detailed descriptions of review findings.
  • Participate in quality assurance and manufacturing audits.
  • Prepare technical briefs, presentations and reports that identify work progress, defects/non-conformances, and areas of concern.
  • Witness various rail car equipment undergoing qualification testing, including seat sled testing and ASTM E 119 floor fire testing.
  • Assist with the conduct of forensic investigations of failed components and equipment and reporting findings under the direction of senior staff.
  • Develop technical specifications for rail car interiors and other rail car mechanical equipment.
  • Provide engineering support as required.


You bring to the role:

  • A minimum of 5 years of total experience including at least 2 years of experience in the rail industry.
  • Knowledge of railcar interiors (materials, seats, flooring, windows, FST, ADA, toilet modules, operator’s cab layout, ergonomics, etc).
  • Knowledge of rail car regulations such as the Code of Federal Regulations and rail car industry standards such as APTA standards and recommended practices.
  • Experience with 3D modelling software such as Solidworks.
  • Excellent analytical, written, and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrate strong organizational skills, work well within a team, take direction from other senior staff members, be able to multi-task on a variety of work assignments, and meet deadlines.
