NATURE OF WORK

As a member of the Parks, Recreation & Culture Division, the individual in this position assists with the administration and supervision of multiple programs and events by effectively planning, marketing, executing and evaluating safe and effective class curriculum and activities. These programs include, but are not limited to: day camps, general classes, active adults and special events. This position ensures the safety and well-being of all participants enrolled.

Work hours will vary depending on assigned programs, not to exceed 28 hours per week. The individual in this position must be available for trainings immediately following employment.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Individuals work under the direct supervision of the Recreation Coordinator or Supervisor – to carry out assigned duties, functions, roles, and projects in both routine and complex circumstances.

Essential Job Functions

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

The individual in the Recreation Specialist – General + Events role is assigned specific assignments, job duties, scope, authority, responsibility, roles and requirements as determined by the town, department, division, and pursuant to laws, regulation and practices. Individuals in this position must be able to successfully perform, be responsible for, and/or assist in the fulfillment of many job functions and duties, with or without reasonable accommodation.

The following duties and responsibilities are illustrative of the primary functions of this position and are not intended to be all inclusive:

  • Coordinates with the Recreation Coordinators and Supervisors in organizing, scheduling and supervising a variety of programs and events appropriate for different age groups.
  • Prepare program materials, equipment, and other necessary items; organize related equipment; inspect equipment to insure safety and cleanliness.
  • Set-up, distribute, and collect materials and equipment for programs.
  • Responsible for purchasing supplies and equipment as needed.
  • Assist in maintaining a variety of records and reports, including registrations, attendance, reservations, permission slips, waivers, purchases, accidents, and incidents.
  • Provide coaching, guidance, and instruction to facilitate appropriate fun, safe, and supportive participation in which participants can challenge themselves during activities.
  • Perform a variety of miscellaneous duties such as answering the telephone, running errands as needed.
  • Immediately report all incidents, injuries and /or unsafe conditions to supervisor.
  • Inventory and manage program equipment and supplies including vehicles, keys, town credit card, general activity supplies, and other town-owned property.
  • Take proper safety precautions, anticipate unsafe circumstances, and act accordingly to prevent accidents and injuries.
  • Communicate effectively with Recreation Coordinators in order to provide quality programs.
  • Enforces all department policies, rules and regulations while maintaining a friendly and professional attitude.
  • Exercise discretion and good judgement if the supervisor is not available for advisement.
  • Be available for the entire length of the program.
  • Demonstrate a positive work ethic.
  • Work directly with youth in games, crafts, swimming, activities and other inventive activities.
  • Represent the town in a positive, professional and healthy manner
  • May assist with the scheduling vendors, food trucks, and other program-related tasks for events
  • Provides exceptional guest service to all guests. Responds to information requests, comments and complaints from the public.
  • Acts as a liaison with vendors, contractors, and coordinators across multiple communication methods to ensure a smooth operation of events.
  • Sets up event supplies, such as tables, chairs, tents, event fencing, power equipment, etc. prior to events as needed; properly stores supplies after the event.
  • Adhere to town policies, standards, and regulations, including but not limited to proper attire, safety procedures, and overall professionalism.
  • Attends and participate in staff meetings and trainings.
  • May serve or fill in for the Recreation Coordinator in their absence.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

OTHER DUTIES

Depending on organizational need, additional duties may include the following:

  • The Recreation Specialist position participates in the Shared Fleet Vehicle Program, which requires an annual motor vehicle record check.
  • Performs research as directed, such as discovering new technology or tools, market research, etc.
  • Performs related duties as established by law/ordinance or reasonably directed by the town.
  • Submit hours and an accurate time card on time and in compliance with town policies.
  • Give and receive constructive criticism and feedback.
  • May be involved in special projects that are directly or indirectly related to essential job functions.
  • Continue educational and certification requirements in order to remain abreast of current methods and procedures.
  • Assists other town departments, as necessary.

Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND FORMAL TRAINING

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Associates degree in Recreation, Physical Education, Exercise Science or related field preferred.
  • Previous two plus years of experience preferred in customer service, recreation or related field.

LICENSES OR CERTIFICATES

  • A valid Colorado Driver's License that meets the Town of Windsor’s standards; ability to maintain throughout employment with the town.
  • Current CPR, AED and First Aid certifications required within 30 days of hire

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Ability to interact with all age groups this may include instruction, communication of rules and regulations and enforcing policies.
  • Ability to effectively present curriculum one-on-one and/or in group format.
  • Uses discretion and training to solve problems.
  • Demonstrate time management skills by beginning and completing assigned shifts and/or utilizing program time effectively.
  • Ability to effectively present verbal and written information and respond to questions from guests, program participants, co-workers, supervisors, volunteers, and other Town employees.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, peers, and town staff. Including the ability to follow directions and demonstrate professional behavior.
  • Ability to remain composed in emergency situations, make sound judgment and work effectively with guests and other recreation staff under stressful circumstances. Ability to perform first aid, CPR and other medical attention as needed.
  • Ability to safely operate all assigned tools, safety products, and kitchen equipment. Ability to set up and tear down equipment for scheduled activities and special events.
  • Demonstrated personal effectiveness, credibility, thoroughness, flexibility, and collaboration skills in adhering to and advancing the town’s vision, mission and values.
  • Demonstrated pride, enthusiasm and positive attitude in working with children and adults with disabilities and with the public.
  • Ability to make independent decisions and work from broad direction with minimal supervision as well as a part of a team by supporting others and taking initiative to complete programs or projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize tasks and working environment to maximize efficiency and effectiveness, adapting to interruptions, equipment failures, unusual demands, or changing priorities as needed.
  • Ability to complete and maintain well-organized daily records, logs and incident reports.
  • Knowledge of RecTrac preferred, but not required.

MATERIALS and EQUIPMENT USED

Materials and equipment used include, but may not be limited to the following:

  • Equipment: Position requires use of a variety of equipment including town vehicles, computers, tablets or other digital equipment, digital cameras, copiers, printers, scanners, telephones, participant electric or standard wheelchairs, and wheel chair lift.
  • Materials: Position requires use of or exposure to a variety of materials including gasoline and chlorine.

The physical requirements of this position are considered Medium Work, exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, and/or operation of machines (including inspection); using measurement devices; and/or assembly or fabrication of parts at distances close to the eyes.

The employee is subject to inside environmental conditions; subject to noise.

The worker is subject to atmospheric conditions: One or more of the following conditions that affect the respiratory system of the skin: Fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases or poor ventilation.
