Your Role

The Part time Recreation Specialist I – Sports Management ($19.75 per hour) duties will include but not be limited to:

Planning, coordinating, implementing and evaluating youth and adult athletic leagues, programs, services and operations of Sports Management while providing excellent customer service to internal and external customers.

Leading/ instructing activities in field of expertise and managing facility operations while adequately ensuring safety standards for facility, program and participants.

Provide leadership, supervision, training, scheduling, mentoring/coaching, and evaluation of part time staff and volunteers

Enforce City and Department policies, procedures and practices

Assist in facility supervision during events to include set up and breakdown as required

Recommend and submit equipment and supply orders, complete inventories, inspect, report on and repair assigned equipment to ensure safety

Assist staff in routine problem solving

Research, recommend and implement new ideas/resources for programs and activities

Investigate and document accidents and incidents

Assist in coordination of facility use to include processing reservation requests

Assume duties of supervisors in their absence

Operate city vehicles

Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less. Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on then current workloads and department needs.

Minimum Requirements:

Requires any combination of education (above the high school level) and/or experience equivalent to four (4) years in fields utilizing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities and associated with such positions as recreation leaders or recreation program supervisor.
Special Requirements:
Must be available to work varied hours, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays and overtime when required to meet operational needs.
Required to have a current and valid driver’s license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV driver’s license eligibility requirements.
This position may require the incumbents to wear personal protective equipment or attire in designated areas of risk.

Ability to work with diverse age ranges, cultures and social backgrounds
Knowledge of facility maintenance and operations related to athletic programs/complexes
Knowledge of principles, rules and regulations of youth and adult athletic leagues
Experience using Microsoft Computer programs (Word, Access, Outlook, Excel) and Active Net
Ability to manage challenging interpersonal working relationships with employees and the public

Special Instructions:

Days, nights, weekends and holidays- schedule will be based on sport, season and event schedules.
Approximately 20 hours per week, hours may increase or decrease weekly based on sport seasons and event schedules
The individual selected for this position will be housed at a primary site but may be scheduled between other park sites/facilities. Schedules will be adjusted seasonally and will vary weekly based on events, facility coverage, and weather.
Some assignments may require overtime or split shifts to cover operational needs.
All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours or maybe be relocated to another location or job assignment in response to short- term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies including weekends, evenings and holidays.
