JOB DESCRIPTION

TITLE: Rehabilitation Aide

General Summary: The Rehabilitation Aide assists in carrying out patient- and non-patient related activities some of which require heavy lifting, such as positioning, ambulating and transferring patients. All activities are assigned and supervised by a licensed therapy practitioner. Aides at all times will exemplify the Rush mission, vision and values and act in accordance with Rush and department policies and procedures.
Principle Duties and Responsibilities

Independently lifts, transfers, stands, walks and toilets patients as directed.
Transports patients, hospital records, equipment and other materials as directed.
Carries out predetermined assignments for patients as delegated by therapy practitioners; performs selected treatments that are sanctioned under Illinois practice acts.
Assists patients in the safe practice of activities related to the development of strength and endurance activities, and ambulating as assjgned.
Reports changes in patient condition to therapist.
Assists therapists and patients before, during and after therapy.
Sets up treatment areas before and breaks down after patient care.
Participates in documentation needs (schedules, calendars, etc.) as directed.
Performs dressing changes on open wounds and burn patients as directed, as sanctioned by Illinois practice acts, using sterile technique.
Wipes down equipment and mats with cleaning agents as directed.
Makes equipment and supply rounds as needed.
Inspects equipment routinely; reports repair needs to the appropriate department and follows up with that department.
Maintains inventory and ensures adequate stock levels.
Delivers and picks up supplies as needed.
Maintains cleanliness of therapy equipment and work areas
Changes bed linens on mats and beds, contributes to maintaining orderliness of treatment areas.
Answers and assists with patient requests.
Answers telephones as delegated.
Assists with other clerical duties as requested.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Continually improves personal skills to ensure the highest quality of patient comfort and safety.
Treats patients, visitors and staff in a caring manner with respect and dignity.
Exhibits the spirit of team in working with other Rush staff.
Utilizes the resources of the Medical Center in a responsible manner to accomplish daily work.
Arrives on time as scheduled and is prepared to work.
Attends training and educational programs identified by Rush as necessary for this position.
Interacts with patients, visitors and staff in an age appropriate manner.
Knowledge:
Basic reading, writing and math skills.
Basic medical/healthcare terminology.
Basic computer and information technology skills.

Skills:
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Effective interaction with others in difficult situations.
Abilities:
Work requires the ability to walk throughout the Medical and Academic complex and to be standing or walking most of the designated shift.
Work requires lifting or carrying objects 40 - 50 pounds independently and supporting and positioning patients, some of whom may exceed 300 pounds.
Work conditions include performing procedures where carelessness could result in injury or illness, and coming into contact with potentially infectious materials and/or strong chemical agents is expected.
