Position Summary

Columbia University’s Wellness Center is home to Columbia’s Community Health Worker (CHW) Training Institute called Institute for Training Outreach and Community Health (InTOuCH). This program recruits trusted members from faith and community-based organizations to complete an eight-week, certified CHW training curriculum in stroke and cardiovascular disease prevention.

Within the InTOuCH program, the “Solutions to Health Disparities: Building Capacity for Community Health Workers Project” will expand upon the existing CHW training curriculum by (a) developing a standardized curriculum, and competency assessment tools (b) validating the new curriculum and assessments (c) developing teaching best practices and guidelines (d) evaluating and empirically testing the new curriculum with CHWs.

The Research Coordinator will have a strong understanding of the sociocultural factors that contribute to health disparities, with a specific focus on African-American faith-based communities. The Research Coordinator will work under the direction of the program director and assist with the development, implementation, dissemination, and maintenance of research project information and program materials. This position is part of a team that creates high-quality research and collaborates with internal and external partners.

  • Partner with Program Director, and InTOuCH team to assess and evaluate the training program and teaching curriculum
  • Participate and facilitate InTOuCH training sessions for curriculum development and expansion as needed.
  • Participate and engage in CHW alumni training, screening, and outreach events to assess program needs for curriculum development
  • Conduct research on literature, educational trends, and best practices to identify new curriculum models or teaching methods.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of existing curriculum materials, revising, and updating curriculum where needed.
  • Collaborate with the program director and curriculum team to develop competency assessment tools aligned with the curriculum.
  • Use mixed methods research to collect data for validation studies through various means such as classroom observations, assessment tests for knowledge and skills
  • Evaluate the validity and reliability of new curriculum and assessments tools using advanced statistical analyses.
  • Interpret the results of validation studies; develop reports, manuscripts, and key findings for the research team and stakeholders.
  • Assists with day-to-day operations for Program Director, and Principal Investigation (PI) including meeting logistics, correspondence, and budget for the InTOuCH program.

Minimum Qualifications:
Requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent in education and experience, plus three years of related experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree required with a Doctorate Degree preferred in public health, social work, counseling, sociology or a related field.
  • Additional experience in research, literature reviews, qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis, management and analysis of data sets, and test and survey development, preferred.
  • Familiarity with Institutional Review board protocols, research databases, etc.
  • Familiarity with community-based participatory research.
  • Clinical, research, and/or personal experience working with local churches and community-based organizations.

Other Requirements

  • Additional experience in research, literature reviews, qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis, management and analysis of data sets, and test and survey development, preferred.
  • Familiarity with Institutional Review Board protocols, research databases, etc.

  • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
  • Must be able to provide a writing sample.
