Position Summary

We seek a motivated and independent Research Project Manager for a full-time position to assist Principal Investigator (PI) Dr. Denise Hynes and her team in the Center to Improve Veteran Involvement in Care (CIVIC) at the VA Portland Health Care System (Portland, Oregon). The Research Project Manager will provide support to multiple research projects focused on care management and outcomes for chronic conditions that affect military veterans. Studies are led out of the Portland VA and involve collaboration with other VA and academic partners across the US.

Specific research projects topics are related to care coordination impacts on outcomes for patients with high-risk conditions, Veteran and provider perceptions of integrated care, and long-term outcomes of COVID. These research projects employ a health services research framework and typically include use of both quantitative and qualitative methods. Current projects are observational and future intervention projects are planned. The ideal candidate will have experience with project management for observational studies, surveys, multisite studies, health services research interventions, and/or pragmatic clinical trials.

This position will be located at VA CIVIC (https://www.portlandcoin.research.va.gov/). CIVIC was established in 2013 as a Center of Innovation in health services research at the VA Portland Health Care System. CIVIC’s mission is to conduct research that empowers veterans to improve their health through engagement in self-care, engagement with VA and non-VA healthcare systems, and engagement in the research process. Responsibilities

The primary responsibility is to manage and organize specific projects and/or project components within larger studies led by the PI. Specific responsibilities may include:

  • Project management across multiple research projects that include secondary data analysis and prospective data collection, including a national survey of Veterans and a provider survey
  • Maintaining a research study tracking database, overseeing recruitment of research participants, preparation of study approval documents
  • Supervising research assistants
  • Communication and coordination with other study staff and collaborators, including co-investigators, data analysts, biostatisticians, and operational partners
  • Developing study standard operating procedures and ensuring study activities are being conducted with fidelity to research protocols
  • Contributing to the writing and preparation of scholarly manuscripts for scientific journals and presentations of study findings at professional meetings.
  • Maintaining Institutional Review Board and other regulatory compliance
  • Budget management
  • Assisting with grant preparation and submissions

Experience

Minimum Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., M.P.H., M.S., M.A.)
  • Experience as a project coordinator or manager working on human subjects research projects, intervention or observational studies.
  • Experience developing budget and personnel forecasts within a research setting
  • Experience working on multiple prior research studies as a research coordinator or similar position
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize projects/activities
  • Rigorous attention to detail and record keeping
  • Demonstrated experience writing reports that summarize projects and effectively present findings
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with subject-matter specialists and stakeholders in a variety of fields
  • Strong conceptual and analytic skills, oral and written communication skills, and ability to work independently

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of VA policies, procedures, and guidelines that govern projects, including those specific to research-based projects (e.g., IRB)
  • Demonstrated experience as an author for scholarly publications
  • Experience conducting surveys and using REDCap or other survey data management programs
  • Experience conducting quantitative data analysis using statistical software (e.g., Stata), or experience conducting qualitative interviews or analyzing qualitative data
