Camp North Star in Poland Spring, Maine, is hiring a Ropes Course and Outdoors Director

Camp North Star, a premier co-ed traditional sleep-away camp in Southern Maine, (2 hours outside Boston) is looking to hire a Ropes Course and Outdoors Director to join our Leadership Team for the upcoming summer. The compensation includes all living and food expenses. This position is ideal for a teacher, stay at-home parent, or recent college graduate.

Camp age children of the director who enroll at North Star, attend tuition-free.

We are seeking a Director who ideally has:

  • Previous sleepaway camp experience preferably in a leadership role.
  • Experience in an administrative or supervisory role in a similar environment.
  • Experience working on a challenge course and working knowledge of the equipment and safety systems that accompany them including belay systems, rescues, debriefing facilitation, etc.
  • ACCT Level 1 Challenge Course Practitioner Certification. Level 2 is preferred.
  • Strong time management skills with the ability to work independently and effectively prioritize duties and tasks.

Overview of Position -

The Ropes Course and Outdoors Director will ensure that the ropes course and rock climbing program is being safely and effectively implemented, which includes safely using equipment and elements and supervising outdoors staff while they implement ropes course and rock climbing programs.

The Ropes Course and Outdoors Director will work with the rest of the North Star Leadership Team to create a family environment for the entire North Star community.

Core Duties and Responsibilities Responsible for the overall success of each student’s health, safety, well being, and experience at Camp North Star -

  • Developing and implement a progression of activities for campers who have registered for ropes course and other outdoors programs.
  • Conduct daily inspections of equipment and elements for safety, cleanliness, and to ensure working conditions.
  • Maintain daily records of equipment in the Ropes Course Equipment Log Book.
  • Teach games, initiative and introductory activities to staff and campers.
  • Train the ropes course staff on a weekly basis the necessary ropes course safety skills and drills to maintain stamina and knowledge.
  • Report any accidents/incidents promptly to the camp director and/or health center supervisor.
  • Maintain supervision and evaluation of the Outdoors Staff performance throughout the camp season.
  • Follow ACCT, ACA, and Maine DOH standards and regulations.
  • Participate as a member of the Leadership Team to deliver and supervise evening programs, special events, overnights, and other activities and camp functions.
  • Maintain supervision and evaluation of the Outdoors Staff performance throughout the camp season.
