A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A SAFETY SPECIALIST

As a Safety Specialist, you establish and promote the maintenance of a safe, accident-free, and healthy work environment. You are responsible for providing field support and overseeing tasks that have an impact on the environment. You implement established safety policies and procedures and assist managers in developing local systems. Staying vigilant, you detect hazards through regular inspections and job safety analyses, as well as assist with incident investigations and regulatory support.

You also take an active role in developing and delivering safety training classes and programs, supporting health and hygiene committees, monitoring industrial health activities, and identifying and recommending actions related to health, a safe work environment, and emergency response. You observe safe work practices, promote HSSE performance, provide assistance in emergency drills, and arrange safety exhibits and materials for display. Providing this level of risk management is incredibly important, and you love knowing you're making a difference!


QUALIFICATIONS FOR A SAFETY SPECIALIST

Requirements

  • A Bachelor of Science degree in natural sciences in any of the following areas: industrial hygiene, safety engineering, or business management, OR an associate degree from a technical training school in a direct safety field along with 2+ years of experience
  • 2+ years of directly related industrial safety experience involving multiple disciplines
  • Computer skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Well-developed planning and organizational skills including the ability to work independently, prioritize activities, meet commitments, and proactively manage time and a heavy workload
  • Ability to train operations personnel
  • Self-directed
  • Ability to solve a broad range of complex problems
  • Certifications highly desirable: Occupational Safety and Health Technician, Associate Safety Professional, Certified Safety Professional, Certified Industrial Hygienist, Registered Sanitarian
  • A working knowledge of CFR 49, AKOSH regulations, and basic Industrial hygiene techniques and principles
  • A valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record for the past three years to be eligible under NMS' vehicle insurance policy

Weather: Indoors: environmentally controlled; requires most or all work to be done inside

Noise level: Quiet

Description of environment: Standard office environment

Physical requirements: Employee is required to lift and move up to 25 lbs. Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, use hands/fingers to handle or feel, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk/hear, see, taste/smell, and carry weight/lift.

Travel: Employee may travel up to 25% to various locations within the U.S. and/or remote locations and may be required to use alternative modes of transportation, including but not limited to snow machines, boats, small airplanes, and ATVs. Travel is coordinated by NMS.
