I. ABOUT THE ROLE
Illinois Marine Towing (IMT) is looking for a Safety Systems Specialist who is passionate about worker safety and health; the maritime and associated businesses; and a desire to achieve safe outcomes. The ideal candidate cares for people, is safety oriented, well organized, and a strong collaborator. The candidate provides safety expertise to business unit leaders and ensures an effective safety system is in place. The Safety Systems Specialist must demonstrate genuine safety leadership to help drive safe outcomes at all of Canal Barge Companies northern operations (Illinois Marine Towing, IMT Shipyard, Canal Terminal Company, Canal Analytical & Environmental Services).
II. FUNCTION
Develops, implements, drives, and participates in CBCN’s safety systems. Supports business unit leaders in ensuring safe outcomes at all CBCN facilities and vessels. Is a felt safety leader across all CBCN’s operations.
III. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
A. Implement, participate in, and continuously improve CBCN’s safety systems.
B. Support regulatory compliance at all CBCN facilities.
C. Conduct safety orientations for new-hires, as appropriate.
D. Work in unison w/CBCN’s business unit leaders to determine the cause of incidents, develop CAPAs, and share key learnings.
E. Actively engages in on-site safety meetings.
F. Participate in customer audits, as needed.
G. Travel to CBC’s offices, facilities, vessels, and areas of operation to provide felt safety leadership - ability to travel 50% of the time.
H. Participate in an on-call rotation.
IV. SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
A. Develop and Implement
  • Ensure operations policies and procedures are periodically reviewed and maintained to reflect safe working practices.
B. Advise
  • Business unit leaders on safe working practices, regulatory compliance, and best practices.
C. Collaborate
  • Share information with operations managers and mariners to raise awareness and provide context regarding incidents.
  • Use information to develop recommended actions/solutions to be implemented within operations to address present safety challenges.

A. Collaborates with CBC’s Safety Systems Specialist to drive useful information, more informed conclusions, and consistent fact-based decision-making.
  • Leading and laggings safety indicators
  • Quarterly leading safety metrics
  • Semi-annual lagging safety metrics
  • High learning value safety bulletins shared with our mariner base and field operations, no less than monthly
  • Support consistency in data and systems use at CBCN
B. Partner with CBCN business unit leaders to achieve best in class safety outcomes for our mariner base and field operations.
The Safety Systems Specialist will prioritize time and resources for CBCN’s operations based on risk.
C. Increase the understanding and usage of CBCN’s safety tools to improve safety results.
VII. ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP
The Safety Systems Specialist is appointed by and reports to the General Manager of Safety Systems.
VIII. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
A. Minimum of three years of experience in occupational safety and health.
  • Understanding of marine transportation and associated operations is preferred.
B. Bachelor’s degree in occupational safety and health or related field is preferred, not required.
C. General awareness of Subchapter M and OSHA is preferred, not required.
IX. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must have the physical ability to transit all work environments for vessel and facility docks.
