About Poppy Bagels

Poppy Bagels is a woman-run business that makes authentic, hand-rolled bagels inspired by California. This means we combine the best of what each coast has to offer. Our bagels have the taste and chew of an east coast bagel while using as many locally-sourced and high-quality ingredients as possible. We use organic flour, get our cream cheese from a nearby dairy, source many of our bagel toppings from a local spice shop, and often rotate in seasonal specials.

For the past 2+ years we have been operating as a delivery and farmer’s market bagel bakery but we are so excited to be opening a new shopwhere we will be baking fresh bagels each day and assembling bagel sandos on site. We are currently finishing shop renovations and are aiming to open in early January.

Our goal is to provide exceptional hospitality; both in service to our guests and to one another. We know that the hospitality industry can be incredibly difficult but also has the potential to be equally rewarding. Our hope is to build a team that works together to cultivate an environment where everyone can grow and thrive.

Duties & Responsibilities

We are looking for an extremely solid member of our opening team who wants to be part of building this tight-knit operation from the ground up. We are aiming to begin training in late December and open to the public in January.

We expect to be busy and maintain a small crew, so you must be reliable. We are looking to fill our team with people who have that magic combination of being both team players but also independent workers who take pride and ownership in whatever they do. Attention to detail is also essential–the bagels need to be consistently high quality day after day.

As a new business, we will be adjusting processes, shifts, responsibilities as we get into our groove. We are looking for someone who is able to roll with the punches and be flexible as we find our footing, but a regular schedule and hours is a short-term goal. Oh, and you must enjoy eating bagels!

The essential job functions include but are not limited to:

• Prepares a full menu of sandos accurately and with high attention to detail while also moving quickly. Every sandwich must look beautiful and be consistent.
• Packages and bags orders.
• Rotates between making egg sandwiches and cold sandwich prep.
• Stays in communication with the bakers to ensure they are replenishing any bagels that might be running low during service.
• Maintains organization of the sandwich prep tables and fridges, including making sure all labeling is up-to-date, and composts older food items as needed.
• Cleans and maintains work areas, utensils and equipment daily. Takes out trash, does dishes and takes pride in a very clean and organized work environment.
• Monitors inventory and notes when we are running low on any items.
• Light prep work (slicing, chopping).
• Participates in up to one deep clean per month.
• Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Currently, no sandwich shift starts before 6am and we plan to close to customers by 2pm each day, so you can enjoy your evenings. That said, early morning shifts and weekend availability is a must.

We also plan to open five days a week a few months after opening, so there will be an opportunity to add a day to your schedule down the line if desired.

Minimum Qualifications

• Must have some professional kitchen experience, ideally in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to work independently and maintain a high standard of quality.
• Strong communication skills.
• Ability to multi-task and prepare food accurately.
• Keeps calm under pressure.
• Experience maintaining and caring for culinary facilities, equipment, supplies and materials.
• Knowledge of food preparation, presentation, techniques, and health standards.
• Spanish language skills are a plus.

This is a physically demanding job, requiring hours on your feet. Work also involves exposure to a wide range of temperatures. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities so long as they can still perform the essential functions of the position.

We are a small, tight-knit team and expect that individuals will be willing to jump in as needed to perform other tasks that might be necessary at the moment. We also plan to do some basic cross-training so that individuals understand the other positions; our goal is for staff to be familiar with the bagel shop operation in its entirety and how it works as a full ecosystem. Pay, Hours, Benefits

• We are looking to fill two full-time positions 32 hrs/week, most likely starting in late December or early January.
• Pay starts at $17/hr DOE. Plus, tips pooled by hours worked.
• We currently offer full-time employees 3 days of paid time off which accrue over the year. Plus, employees with us for over three months will receive an additional week of paid vacation per year when the shop closes for break.
• Shift meal, all the coffee you want and access to any of the day’s extras/leftovers. 30% off on all other orders.

• We will pay for your food handler’s certification if you don’t have it or need to renew during your time with Poppy Bagels.
• Sick time accrued according to Oakland, CA law.
