NuProbe USA is hiring two (2) Senior Scientists for its Houston (TX) location. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to join the NuProbe family in the R&D Department reporting directly to the Director of R&D.


Job Overview

The Senior Scientist is responsible for planning and executing research projects as assigned, supervising members of the team, and the scientific integrity of the work done. The Senior Scientist must ensure transparent and efficient communication of results to others within the Company and third parties, promptly intervene when problems arise, and be able to work with great independence.


Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Essential responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to the following:


  • Projects: Conceptualize projects or part of them, intended as a series of experiments and activities that contribute to the creation of a technology and/or an implementation.
  • Experimental: Conceptualize and execute experiments, identifying resources needed.
  • Data Analysis: Carry out data analysis using specific tools and software as needed, being able to summarize the different variables included.
  • Data Interpretation: Identify the information content of an experiment, identify which questions the data answers, identify which questions were not answered, formulating hypothesis identifying action items.
  • Leadership: Ability to teach technicians and peers the meaning and needs for any given experiment. Supervise no less than two (2) technicians maintaining productivity and ensuring the execution of tasks in a timely manner by the working unit as a whole.
  • Presentations: Carry out the effective presentation of the results collected for internal and external parties.
  • Independence: Ability to carry out the functions above, spending no more than 5% of time necessary with peers and supervisor to carry out said functions.
  • Communication: Ability to maintain communication with external parties, embodying the competence and integrity of NuProbe's R&D community.
  • Competencies:
    • Advance understanding of at least one (1) molecular biology technique (e.g., PCR, NGS)
    • Basic understanding of at least four (4) of the following:
      • Molecular diagnostic/applied genetic (e.g., the clinical significance of mutations, the biology of mutations)
      • Synthetic nucleic acid chemistry (e.g., limitations and opportunities)
      • Sample type and requirements (e.g., FFPE vs. cfDNA)
      • Nucleic Acid thermodynamic (e.g., hybridization thermodynamic)
      • Bioinformatics (e.g., reading and writing scripts to carry out data analysis using no-stock software)
      • Statistics
    • Advanced understanding of at least two (2) of the disciplines mentioned above

PREFERRED BUT NOT REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Background in bioinformatics and knowledge of bioinformatics tools/database (GATK, NCBI, UCSC, Ensembl)
  • Working knowledge of MATLAB and/or Python
  • Experience in Oncology Research or Assay Development
  • Experience with Companion Diagnostics a plus
  • Experience with IVDR or MDR a plus
  • Experience with successful FDA submissions (PMA, 510(k), etc.)

Job Qualifications and Education:

  • PhD degree in molecular biology or related fields
  • At least three (3) years NGS assay development
  • At least three (3) peer review publications
  • At least three (3) years of post-doc experience in NGS assay development if comes from academia

Physical Demands:

This position requires sitting at a desk, standing, bending and extensive use of computer and other work-related electronic devices. Must be able to push, pull, hold files and confer in office spaces. During time of pandemic, this and other roles require the employee to wear a mask over the nose and mouth while on the work premises. Must be able to carry or pick-up items up to 25 pounds at any time. Some travel may be required to carry-out job responsibilities. Employees must keep safety rules and good work practices a priority.
