Description of Job

JOB DUTIES: Your application must provide a detailed description of your relevant work experience in relation to the following duties: This full-time position provides safety and security for the college campus community. Duties include, but are not limited to, patrol of the campus and its buildings, assisting the campus community with a wide variety of problems and concerns, providing first response to campus emergencies and disruptions, parking enforcement, crowd control and traffic control. Maintain a high level of sensitivity and confidentiality at all times.

Primary duties include:

  • Conduct security patrols of campus and all Pikes Peak State College {PPSC) buildings and facilities on foot or by other means and provide stationary security post duties as assigned.
  • Patrol buildings, parking lots and grounds to prevent theft, trespass, vandalism, and other offenses; watch for and investigate unusual or suspicious activities and inappropriate use of college facilities or property; lock and unlock doors, monitor for safety concerns and hazards (i.e., fire, toxic spills, water leaks, etc.) and ensure proper functioning of access control systems; take appropriate action in accordance with federal, state, municipal regulations, and college policy.
  • Respond to all calls for service directed by telephone and/or Campus Police Staff (Corporals, Sergeants, and Chief of Police)
  • Insure that PPSC Police Department Staff and college leadership personnel are notified in a proper and timely manner of breaches of security occurring on college properties or of information received that may create a security risk for the college community such as trespassers.
  • Perform entry requests of college facilities/classrooms upon request for staff and faculty of campus community.
  • Perform safety escorts as requested to and from vehicles and college facilities for students, staff, faculty, and visitors of the campus community.
  • Check campus for unauthorized personnel.
  • Prevent vandalism and theft of college property as well as disruptions caused by physical or verbal conflict when observed.
  • Physically inspect buildings and check doors, windows, entries and exits for safety.
  • Respond to alarms and communicate with and assist, when requested, fire and police responders.
  • Provide customer service by enthusiastically providing information and services.
  • Enforce all written and posted college parking and traffic regulations.
  • Safely respond to non-criminal emergencies.
  • Render first aid in event of minor injuries; request medical response to the scene.
  • Contact PPSC Police personnel to investigate any criminal matters on campus.
  • Work with Campus Police Officers to preserve evidence in incidents that may be criminal in nature.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by superiors.
  • Always utilize hands free device when operating a state vehicle.
  • Work in collaboration and constructive cooperation with fellow officers, Departmental
  • Leadership, and other departments.
  • Provide for effective community relations with the public through verbal and written communication.
  • Check schedule daily to ensure compliance with scheduled shifts.
  • Arrive for shifts ready to start at scheduled time in proper duty uniform with all required equipment and remain present and in proper uniform for duration of scheduled shift.
Additional duties include:
  • Exercise good judgment in assessing behavior and handling interpersonal problems so that errors will not occur misjudging the seriousness of a situation resulting in an inappropriate response.
  • While performing this job, the employee is regularly required to compare, analyze, synthesize, and evaluate data and must rely on interpersonal skills when working with employees, students and/or the public.
  • Mitigating potentially volatile situations, verbally.
  • Administer the day-to-day security operations and implement/enforce all established safety and college policies and procedures.
  • Must exercise discretion and independent judgment with respect to matters of significance as opposed to daily routine decisions.
  • While performing this job, the employee is regularly required to compare, analyze, synthesize, and evaluate data and must rely on interpersonal skills when working with employees, students and/or the public.
  • Record keeping/Documentation duties include: Complete duty logs, prepare written reports and other forms or documentation as required during a shift.
  • Participate in in-service and specialized training and continuing education.
  • Community Relations.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: No minimum qualifications required.

NECESSARY REQUIREMENT: Must possess and maintain a valid Colorado Driver's License.
Must have a high school diploma or GED equivalent.

following: Be at least 18 years of age and have a high school diploma or GED. Strong
communication skills. Experience and ability to work with diverse groups of people. Understand and determine appropriate rules and regulations from various sources. Attention to detail. Knowledgeable in the use of a personal computer and application programs. Previous security or law enforcement experience.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Must submit to and successfully pass a pre-employment physical and background investigation as a condition of hire. The Background investigation is part of the exam process and includes a fingerprint check and drug screening. You must pass the initial review to continue in the examination and interviewing process. You must meet the minimum Employment Standards. Felony convictions or conviction of crimes of moral turpitude or convictions of misdemeanors related to job duties may disqualify you from consideration for this position. Should your background check reveal any charges and convictions, it is your responsibility to provide PPSC Office of Human Resources with an official disposition of the charges. Applicant must also be able to obtain an AED, CPR, & First Aid certification within the first 6 months of employment.

This position requires a pre-employment physical examination, may be required to handle or be exposed to hazardous materials, and a willingness to work nights as scheduled.

This position requires the individual to exert or lift in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. It also requires seizing, holding, controlling, and/or otherwise subduing violent, assaultive, or physically threatening persons to defend oneself or prevent injury. Body strength and agility of all four limbs is necessary.
