Overview

Manages security operations to preserve the safety of persons and assets and to provide outstanding guest service at Columbus Zoo and Aquarium properties.


Responsibilities

  • Oversees the management of all supervisors, full and part time rangers and dispatchers, as well as seasonal staff that includes: dispatch, parking, Zoo Security, and Zoombezi Bay security.
  • Assists Director of Safety & Security with overall risk management/assessment.
  • Oversees the administration, development and execution of departmental Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Manages the departments training and readiness program which includes on-boarding, initial departmental training, and continued employee development throughout the course of their employment.
  • Plans, assigns and reviews the work of, acts on problems, conducts performance reviews, develops and/or identifies professional development opportunities for, and disciplines supervised employees.
  • Patrols Zoo, Zoombezi Bay and Safari Golf Club grounds and offers assistance when needed (e.g., enforcing guest/safety regulations, reporting and responding to unusual incidents, and assisting guests with first aid, lost children and theft issues, or other assistance).
  • Coordinates, prepares for and oversees security assets for special events and programs.
  • Ensures all incident and crash reports, and any other required paperwork is properly completed, distributed, and maintained daily.
  • Budget responsibility for the security department (labor and operating budgets)
  • Hold weekly meetings with Security Supervisors and Security Coordinator to gain an understanding of his/her challenges and needs and to keep lines of communication open in an effort to maintain efficient and effective departmental protocols and systems.
  • Hold regular monthly department meetings
  • In partnership with the Safety Manager, develops and implements a complete safety and security system to ensure the safety and security of all guests, employees, animal collection, buildings, and grounds.
  • Performs regular safety/security walks to identify concerns and facility improvement needs. Active participant in monthly Safety Committee meetings.
  • Summons and directs emergency vehicles and performs crowd control when necessary.
  • Maintains effective liaisons with local law enforcement and emergency response agencies
  • Ensures professional and precise communication is used by departmental staff on all Zoo radio systems.
  • Successfully pass Special Response Team (SRT) qualification semi-annually, ability to lead and direct SRT training.
  • Responds to special SRT needs (ex: ability to use all weapon systems in the inventory, support animal procedures and movements, etc.).
  • Serves as Incident Commander or Manager on Duty when directed.
  • Active participant in the Emergency Response Plan (ERP) and able to pass a semi-annual test on the ERP.
  • Escorts special guests, vendor vehicles, etc. as required.
  • Operates an IP-based camera system to detect unusual situations, investigate potential crimes, and maintain awareness of traffic and crowd issues.
  • Maintains the confidentiality of sensitive information at all times.
  • Constantly strives to further the mission of the organization and avidly supports the Columbus Zoo Family of Parks.
  • Implements sustainable practices in daily tasks whenever possible.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field; five years related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of 5-10 years of security experience preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years of supervisory experience preferred.
  • Professional certification preferred (CPP, APP, ISP, SPO, CSP, etc…)
  • First aid, CPR, and AED certification required within 6 months of placement in position.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite is required. Excellent written and verbal communication skills required.
  • Ability to show solid leadership qualities and manage crisis situations.
  • Accountable for team leadership and management. Must be able to train and motivate team members in all areas of security, safety, and customer service.
  • Must be able to function in a team environment, apply sound management principals, tact, reasoning, prioritization and time management.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends and holidays required.
  • Ability to plan and organize work in an efficient and cost-effective manner and without direct supervision required.
  • Ability to provide excellent guest service by positively interacting with guests and upholding the Make it G.R.E.A.T. standards required.
  • Ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with all Zoo team members and contacts regarding company business required.
  • Ability to adhere to standard operating procedures including but not limited to safety protocols required.
  • Ability to create/maintain staffing levels to ensure appropriate coverage while meeting financial targets.
  • Ability to create, lead and direct the strategic operations of the Security Department.
  • Ability to develop the skills of direct and indirect reports.
  • Ability to solve complex problems independently and proactively adjust operations as needed.
  • Ability to successfully pass special response team qualification at an advanced level, semi-annually required.
  • Possession of a valid Ohio motor vehicle operator’s license and a good driving record required.
  • Proof of negative TB screening prior to placement and annually thereafter required.
  • Ability to adhere to the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium’s drug-free workplace policy including but not limited to pre-employment, random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion and follow-up treatment required.
  • Ability to successfully complete a criminal history background check annually required.
