Summary:

Seeking a Senior Scientist IV with scientific expertise to support risk assessment, safety assessment, exposure assessment, and decision analysis as they relate to (i)identifying and characterizing the sources of and influencing factors impacting foodborne chemical contaminants or pathogens and their risk (ii) characterizing the risk foodborne chemical contaminants or pathogens pose (iii) developing risk-based tools to assist with foodborne outbreak investigations and prevention efforts (iv) characterizing the benefit food nutrients (or microbes) provide to human health and nutrition and (v) evaluating the impact on public health of proposed mitigations/interventions.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Provide expertise on chemical contaminant, microbial pathogen, or nutritional exposure assessment from foods
  • Create and/or review plans for exposure assessments for contaminants in foods
  • Conduct complex exposure assessments • Create database systems and/or data files needed for exposure assessment
  • Update existing database systems and/or data files needed for exposure assessment
  • Review data on contaminant concentrations in foods
  • Review exposure-related data in files prepared by others
  • Prepare manuscripts or presentations related to contaminant concentrations or exposure
  • Review manuscripts related to contaminant concentrations or exposure
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams and people to integrate solutions

Necessary Skills & Knowledge:

  • Experience in dietary exposure estimation including expertise in methodology used to develop data on food consumption, food availability, and food sales.
  • Experience planning and executing exposure assessments for contaminants or nutrients in foods (or the environment) integrating concentration data, “recipes” data, and consumption/intake data.
  • Experience designing surveys for determining prevalence and levels of contaminants or nutrients in food/environmental samples.
  • Ability to create and query data tables in Microsoft Access (or SAS, Stata or R).
  • Experience curating and analyzing experimental analytical data on nutrient or contaminant concentrations in foods or the environment, including methodological differences in sensitivity, selectivity, LOD, and LOQ.
  • Experience working with and extracting data from sampling, consumption, and epidemiological data bases (such as FDA FACTS, CDC’s NHANES, TDS, and FOODNET) for use in risk assessment.
  • Skilled in planning and organizing work on multiple projects and competing deadlines, and in planning, organizing, and directing scientific studies and related activities.
  • Strong skills in preparing reports and clearly presenting results and conclusions as well as abilities to articulate scientific data and results to non-scientific staff.
  • Strong skills in communicating scientific analyses or findings, both orally and in writing.
  • Expertise on chemical contaminant, microbial pathogen, or nutritional exposure assessment from foods to inform FDA and stakeholder decisions related to food safety and nutrition, especially work in support of the FDA’s efforts in maternal and infant health and produce safety, including the Closer to Zero Action Plan, the Toxic Elements Working Group, the FDA Total Diet Study, New Era of Smarter Food Safety, FDA Leafy Greens STEC Action Plan, and related plans.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Masters to Ph.D. in any of the following: food technology, or dairy technology, microbiology, biology, chemistry, physics, or a related discipline or field of biological or physical science.
  • Minimum five (5) or more years of experience
