POSITION: Severe Disabilities Aide

REPORTS TO: Site Principal

CLASSIFICATION: Classified

BOARD APPROVED: November 23, 1999

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:

Under general supervision of the Principal to assist Certificated Special Education personnel in working with children who have severe disabilities.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Attend In-service training activities
  • Prepare learning materials
  • Operate office machines
  • Take roll and keep attendance
  • Direct learning activities
  • Supervise playground areas
  • Help administer and score tests
  • Shadow designated students throughout the school day to enforce appropriate student behavior
  • Help maintain order on school campuses
  • Toilet, feed, and assist students as needed
  • Attend or report to IEP’s, as needed
  • Restrain and control students when appropriate
  • Perform other duties related to children as directed
  • Duties dependent on IEP’s and the current enrollment of assigned student

SUPERVISION EXERCISED OR RECEIVED:

Under supervision of Certificated person to whom directly assigned.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Graduation from High School or equivalent and experience in working with children.
  • Must have an ability and willingness to work with a range of student severe disabilities.
  • Must be willing and able to get training in Children Control Positioning Techniques.
  • Must be No Child Left Behind (NCLB) compliant via one of the following: AA Degree, minimum of 48 semester units or have taken and passed the State Mandated

Proficiency Test in basic skills.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of basic instructional materials, methods and procedures as used by teachers in the classroom.
  • Ability to work harmoniously with children; ability to follow verbal and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with others.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Physically capable of restraining and physically controlling students as needed.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels.
  • Ability to communicate so others will be able to clearly understand a normal conversation.
  • Ability to bend and twist, sit, stoop, kneel, push, pull, and crawl.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds.
  • Ability to carry 25 pounds.
  • Ability to reach in all directions.
  • Ability to work at heights.
  • Ability to ascend and descend ladder.

MEDICAL ASSESSMENT:

Must successfully pass a District paid Pre-Placement Medical Assessment.
