Shared Epidemiologist - Island and San Juan Counties Job at Island County

Summary

This is a full-time shared epidemiologist position between two remote, island counties in Washington State, Island County and San Juan County. The position will be hosted by Island County with the option for remote work based in Washington State . The work will include travel to San Juan County. This position is currently funded through June 30, 2025.

Job Duties

Plans and conducts epidemiologic investigations to address public health issues and to inform program planning and the development of health policy.

Performs statistical analyses related to complex analytical assessments and investigations involving specialized data. Adapts or combines a variety of existing statistical methods to fulfill project needs. Uses public health data systems to collect disease and/or health outcome data.

Conducts advanced descriptive and comprehensive analyses of public health data for multiple audiences. Prepares and presents written and oral statistical reports that communicate necessary information to professional audiences, policy makers, and the general public. Recommends public health actions that would be relevant to the affected community.

Collaborates with program staff on survey or investigation design processes, including conducting a review of existing literature and data in an assigned area, determining methodological techniques and processes, and drafting questionnaires and other data-collection instruments.

Supports implementation and evaluation of community health assessments for department programs. Uses knowledge of specific sociocultural factors in the population to interpret findings.

Participates in or provides consultation to statewide and community groups, committees and coalitions, develops community health indicators, and prepares information for release and presentation for reporting purposes and to the public.

Assists with focus groups and qualitative data analysis in support of CHA activities.

Participates in community engagement and meetings as requested by lead county staff..

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of and skill in utilizing, epidemiologic principles, practices, and basic biostatics.

Knowledge of community health assessment frameworks and best practices.

Knowledge of state and local public health data systems. Experience in or familiarity with R, Power BI, and Microsoft Dynamics databases.

Knowledge of data management and data sharing practices.

Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing to a wide range of audiences, both lay and professional.

Knowledge of, and a commitment to, equity, diversity, and inclusion as it relates to data collecting, analysis, and visualization.

Ability to develop strong professional relationships across two counties and among community partners.

Specific knowledge of the unique needs of populations in remote communities.

Ability to deal with rapid changes in events, remain calm in stressful situations, and relate to various personality styles in a professional and empathetic manner.

Education, Experience & Certifications

Valid Washington State Driver's License.

A master's degree or higher in epidemiology or a master’s degree or higher in public health or a closely allied field that includes courses in epidemiology, biostatics, or research methodology AND 2 years of work in the field of public health, epidemiology, or data analysis.

On-going training is also required to ensure knowledge of best practices in the area of assessment and new programs/technologies.
