The Social Media and Outreach Coordinator plays a critical role in strengthening and expanding the Division’s communications and outreach capabilities to communicate the value of DER’s ecological restoration work to partners and stakeholders and to build public support for ecological restoration. This position leads and supports key outreach projects and initiatives, including managing and expanding the Division’s social media presence and e-newsletter. The position also provides support for essential communications tasks including responding to time-sensitive communications issues and requests for information, planning and organizing public events, writing and reviewing press releases and reports, and responding to media requests. The position coordinates closely with communications staff in the Department of Fish and Game and its Divisions.

Detailed Statement of Duties and Responsibilities

DETAILED STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Social Media and Outreach Coordinator works in close collaboration with DER’s communications staff, leadership, and technical staff to implement and evaluate DER’s communications tasks and strategies. The Social Media and Outreach Coordinator will:


  • Promote DER’s work to engage new and existing audiences, in coordination with Department of Fish and Game communications staff.
  • Assist with the implementation of strategic communications plans to advance DER’s ecological restoration programs and practices, stakeholder engagement, training programs, and other initiatives, using the most up-to-date communications science and best practices.
  • Synthesize and translate complex ecological restoration and climate adaptation concepts and projects into compelling stories, using a wide variety of digital and print media formats.
  • Implement best practices for social media strategies to support DER’s communication goals. Create engaging content for use on DER’s social media platforms and manage, track, and report social media performance.
  • Develop and distribute issues of DER’s e-newsletter using an editorial process based on best practices.
  • Strategically distribute DER job offerings and related outreach to reach diverse and qualified candidates.
  • Collaborate with DER’s federal, state, and NGO partners on communications strategies, projects, and events.
  • Research, develop, author, and promote a variety of communication materials including but not limited to news releases, fact sheets, web articles, and other materials.
  • Support the development of DER publications and other products to communicate best restoration practices, including but not limited to manuals, training materials, presentations, reports, and other materials.
  • Support DER and DFG public affairs activities such as ground-breaking events, ribbon cutting events, and grant announcement events.
  • Assist with drafting and reviewing press releases, media advisories, and other products for engaging with the news media.
  • Respond to requests for information from internal and external stakeholders, coordinating with DER staff as needed.
  • Develop and review talking points for DER, DFG, EEA, or other state officials for public affairs events and other purposes.
  • Assist with DER’s media outreach, working closely with DER communications staff and leadership, as well as DFG and EEA staff.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3+ years relevant communications work experience; a degree in environmental communications, environmental studies, or similar field desired; background in social marketing or similar strategies a plus.
  • Experience implementing communications plans and strategies for a range of audiences.
  • Ability to assess coworker and stakeholder needs, develop initiatives to meet identified needs, and work independently to guide and implement the needed initiatives.
  • Experience translating complex environmental science and policy subjects into compelling stories across a range of formats such as writing, photography, videography, and graphic design.
  • Strong writing and editing skills; able to write effectively for a variety of stakeholder audiences.
  • Experience creating content for various social media platforms (e.g. Twitter, Instagram, Facebook). Familiarity with managing and tracking social media performance to inform social media strategies.
  • Experience writing essays, magazine articles, web pages, blog, social media, and other content related to environmental stories and issues.
  • Experience coordinating content from various writers, editing pieces, and ensuring a consistent voice.
  • Familiarity with public affairs work, such as drafting press releases, public affairs and outreach event coordination, briefing leadership level staff, and developing talking points or speeches for leadership staff.
  • Familiar with content and email marketing systems. Familiarity with Constant Contact and Drupal a plus.
  • Experience using Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of cross-functional teams, with the capacity to plan and prioritize tasks appropriately.
  • Ability to advance multiple projects simultaneously and meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to motivate and mobilize others to complete joint projects and reach shared goals.
  • Proficient usage of Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
  • Ability to establish positive relationships and deal tactfully with others.
  • Ability to adjust to varying or changing situations to meet emergency or changing program requirements.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment.
  • Ability to exercise discretion in handling confidential information.

Qualifications Acquired on the Job

Knowledge of the policies, procedures, specifications, standards, and guidelines governing assigned unit activities. Knowledge of the laws, policies, and regulations governing assigned unit activities.

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must have at least (A) three years of full time, or equivalent part-time, professional, administrative or managerial experience in business administration, business management or public administration the major duties of which involved program management, program administration, program coordination, program planning and/or program analysis, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

Substitutions:
I. A Bachelor's degree with a major in business administration, business management or public administration may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the-required experience.*

II. A Graduate degree with a major in business administration, business management or public administration may be substituted for the required experience.*

III. A Bachelor's or higher degree with a major other than in business administration, business management or public administration may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required experience.*

  • Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
