As part of a teaching assignment, teaches one or more classes of Social Studies and assists in other school programs as assigned. Provides educational programs and experiences which will fulfill the district’s and school’s state philosophy, goals, and objectives.

BASIC FUNCTION:
To help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their development as mature, able, and responsible men and women.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Teaches courses in social studies, history, geography, American government, political science, or humanities to secondary students, utilizing course of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities. Instructs students in citizenship, basic communication skills, and other general elements of the course of study common to all teachers as specified in the state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district. Develops knowledge of the purpose, structure, and operation of the American government and economic system, and the rights and responsibilities of American citizenship.

Teaches district approved curriculum.

Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.

Plans a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests and abilities of the students.

Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interest of the student.

Encourages students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.

Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and--in harmony with the goals-- establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects and the like to communicate these objectives to students.

Diagnoses the learning disabilities of students.

Evaluates students= academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records and prepares progress reports.

Is available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day.

Supervises classroom and students.

ENTRANCE QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor Arts degree in area of major study.

ABILITIES:

Develop needs assessment and individual learning plans for students enrolled in program. Read and analyze and interpret periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations. Write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals. Effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrations, staff and the general public. Solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Apply current research and theory to program.

Plan and implement lessons based on district and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Establish and maintain effective relationships with staff, students, peers and parents. Speak clearly and concisely in oral and written communication.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 50 lbs. Such as boxes of books and AV/VCR carts. The employee is directly responsible for the safety, well-being, or work output of other people.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

A valid California teaching credential in the area of study is required.
