The Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL) has been developing innovative technologies and solutions for cutting-edge DoD and intelligence programs for almost six decades. Our expertise is in space and airborne IR, VIS, UV, and RF sensors, small satellite technologies, test and calibration, cybersecurity, data visualization and assurance, and ground stations.

SDL is seeking candidates for a Software Systems Engineer to work directly with program management, software engineers, software testers, spacecraft engineers, ground terminal engineers, mission operators, technical writers, and customers to ensure successful program execution and technical design/architectures are established for our customers. The selected candidate will help direct, lead, design, and implement contractual requirements from our customers and look for ways to improve our engineering processes and software deliveries.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work with program management and customers to fully understand program requirements, schedule deadlines, mission CONOPS, and funding constraints
  • Help to develop engineering schedules and coordinate with program managers and internal/external team members to ensure that all technical program deliveries and milestones are met
  • Design/review software architectures of applications within distributed computing networks, data networks, network simulation, and tactical networks.
  • Leverage engineering teams, make assessments of computer networks, and satellite ground stations to support on-orbit spacecraft
  • Ensure proper coordination is exercised across the ground systems
  • Support engineering design reviews and teleconferences by creating technical presentations and presenting technical solutions to meet program requirements
  • Work with software testers and technical writers to ensure test procedures, user manuals, and training materials are accurate and complete
  • Minimal travel to support technical meetings, test support activities, and system demonstrations
  • Suggest and implement new engineering practices and techniques to help SDL develop/maintain better processes and technology solutions
  • Help to mentor and train engineers
  • System engineering tasks: supply chain, requirements generation and tracking, integration, testing, data flows, etc.

Required Qualifications:

  • BS in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, or related field
  • 5+ years professional experience
  • Possess a working knowledge in several of the following areas: software design, algorithm development and efficient implementation, sensor data fusion, data visualization, graphical user interfaces, image and signal processing, remote sensing, ground support equipment, database design, sensor modeling, commanding and controlling spacecraft on-orbit, and web development
  • Experience in at least one of the following languages: C#, C++, Java, JavaScript
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to perform engineering trade-offs between customer requirements, schedule deadlines, program funding, and engineering best practices
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment on collaborative efforts involving both internal and external team members
  • Must have or be able to obtain a DoD security clearance (TS/SCI)
  • Must be a US citizen
  • Must be able to travel


Preferred Qualifications Skills:

  • Basic understanding of computer networking, network devices, and network protocols
  • Familiarity of government and commercial ground terminal networks
  • Experience with small or large satellite programs and satellite comms and subsystems
  • Basic understanding of EO/IR sensor operating principles, synthetic scene generation, and system performance assessment techniques
  • Familiarity with scripting in a Unix or Windows environment (i.e., PowerShell and Bash)
  • Possess familiarity with basic Windows or Unix administration tasks and web application servers
  • Working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, Power Point, Project, Visio, etc.
