What you'll do:

Sound is adding a Facilities Manager to lead our efforts in providing safe and efficient operations of our headquarters office and research laboratory. The Facilities Manager will assist with the final stage of a new facility build and occupation of a state-of-the-art, 33k square foot facility in Emeryville, CA. After move-in, the Facilities Manager is responsible for the maintenance and repair of the facility, procurement of key equipment, serves as the site safety coordinator, and works collaboratively to plan for efficient and economical operations. This role manages the facilities group, including lab operations and office support teams, and reports to the VP, People. This role is based in Emeryville, CA.
Ideal candidates have experience with innovative biotech lab facilities operations, including leading lab operations teams and an onsite office coordinator. The two most important needs this role will encounter in the first 90 days is 1) partner with the current team to support our new space move in, and 2) building out the facilities team with potentially 2-3 hires. Standout candidates are able to demonstrate an employee-centric mindset and ability to lead through influence.

Compensation Target:
$150,000 to 157,000 base salary
Bonus target 10%
Bonuses are earned based on annual company and individual performance and are prorated based on start date.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the smooth operation of a single site laboratory and office facility by prioritizing safety, maintenance and efficient operations
  • Manage and coordinate facility maintenance and repair, including but not limited to: HVAC, Plumbing, Electrical, Laboratory waste, Building systems and Recycling
  • Proactively identify current and future maintenance requirements by establishing rapport with stakeholders across levels
  • Work with key stakeholders to resolve current maintenance problems in a way that minimizes downtime and disruptions to office and research operations
  • Directs custodial and facility work functions to maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment
  • Plan to procure, install, and startup new equipment in consultation with key stakeholders
  • Establish Facility specific Standard Operating Procedures and collaborate with research team members to establish Research specific Standard Operating Procedures creation and adherence
  • Protect employees and visitors by maintaining a safe and clean working environment
  • Develop a facility safety and maintenance plan, ticketing system and track results
  • Create a Culture of Safety within the organization, from the ground up
  • Create, manage and administer Safety Training, Site Orientation, Hazard Specific training
  • Ensure that all federal, state and local regulations related to licensing compliance, safety, EPA, OSHA rules and regulations are adhered to
  • Manage building access, security and utility infrastructure and utilities expenditures
  • Achieve financial objectives by preparing and operating within an annual budget
  • Plan, hire and manage roles for the facilities team
  • Special projects and other duties, as needed

Targeted Skills & Experience

  • Progressive multi-year experience in lab management/operations with an emphasis on laboratory safety, operations and implementation of scaled solutions at multiple organizations; expansion of duties to include facilities operations ideal
  • Experience building and managing teams that support the lab and office experience
  • Comfort and experience negotiating with vendors to get high quality products and services at competitive prices
  • Knowledge of Federal, State and Local regulations; including but not limited to CERS, OSHA, EPA and laboratory waste regulations
  • Strong project management skills with attention to detail and accuracy. PMP or FMA a plus
  • Experience with hands-on repair and comfort making basic repairs independently. Experience with local vendors is a plus
  • Flexible, creative, and clever in technical problem solving; comfortable with ambiguity
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced, growth-oriented organization with strong bias to action
  • Must be willing and able to respond after hours in the event of an urgent need to maintain facilities operations, or in response to health or safety needs
  • Passion for mission-based work, especially in sustainability in food and agriculture
